A review of our Women & Golf event on 8 July at The Melbourne Club, Brocket Hall
Women & Golf held a golf day at The Melbourne Club at Brocket Hall in the lovely Hertfordshire countryside this month. Teeing it up at The Melbourne Course, 64 players competed on a beautiful sunny day in picturesque surroundings.
Golf at The Melbourne Club

At the heart of the Brocket Hall Estate, The Melbourne Club offers world class golf facilities in an iconic setting.
Brocket Hall was built in 1760. Once home to two British Prime Ministers and a favourite country retreat for royalty. The two courses are named after the Prime Ministers who used to live here: William Lamb (2nd Viscount Melbourne) and Henry John Temple (3rd Viscount Palmerston).
The Melbourne course was the first course to be laid out in the grounds of Brocket Hall. Designed by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark, it opened for play in 1992. Many people believe that this is one of the finest designs from BBC television's voice of golf. The layout follows the natural contours of the undulating 18th century parkland and the course belies its tender age.
First & 10th Tee Photocall
It was great to welcome back some familiar faces and say hello to players who were attending their first Women & Golf event.
It really was a geographically diverse playing field - teams from 27 clubs and 13 counties competed including Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Kent, Middlesex, Suffolk & Surrey.
Diane from Ashley Wood in Dorset takes the accolades for furthest distance travelled (130 miles)!

A ferry ride to finish

The 18th Hole of The Melbourne Course can be the ruination of many a good scorecard. Delighted by a beautiful vista of Brocket Hall, your mind quickly turns to the watery expanse in front of you. Many players thought long and hard about laying up. Many a ball splashed and crashed.
Fortunately, the players were treated to a calming ferry ride across the Broadwater Lake to compensate.

After Golf in the Oak Room at the Melbourne Club

The players enjoyed a beautifully presented late buffet lunch (with a selection of enticing desserts) in the Oak Room. The room overlooks the putting green and Broadwater Lake. You can also see the picturesque Auberge du Lac restaurant across the water.
After the round, the players commented what a tough challenge the course was but very enjoyable with magnificent views and the course in amazing condition.

The prizes were kindly provided by our fantastic sponsors Duca del Cosma, J.Lindeberg, Motocaddy, Röhnisch, Arccos, Slingsby Gin and Seed Golf.

There were some great scores considering the difficulty of the course and the lightning-fast greens.
Almost all of the field had not played there before and everyone said "they needed to come and play it again!".
No-one bettered their handicap which shows what a challenge it was.
The individual winners were as follows:
🏆 1st Paula Offer from Cambridge Country Club with 34 points wins a pair of Duca del Cosma & matching glove

🥈2nd Kathie Mabberley from Littlestone GC with 31pts (CB) wins an outfit from J.Lindeberg

🏅4th Helen Constantinou from Essendon GC with 30pts (CB) wins an outfit from Rohnisch

🏅5th Mary McDowall from Mill Hill GC with 30pts (CB) wins the Arccos shot tracker sensors

Also worth mentioning is that fact that it was a day of countbacks (CB). 2nd & 3rd place was decided on countback. Five players came in with 30 points, so commiserations to Diane, Tracey and Namik who missed out on 4th & 5th prizes.
Other winners on the day were:

Goody Bags

An integral part of any golf day, each player took away a goody bag containing a W&G shoe bag and shoehorn.
Thanks to Seed Golf for a sleeve of golf balls, St Andrews Bakery for the salted caramel protein snack golf balls, Eucerin for the suncreen and Sundog for the sunglasses. Unfortunately, there was not much sun in evidence but its always good to wear sunscreen even when the clouds are out.

Just to say again how much we appreciated your hard work in arranging the day at Brocket Hall yesterday as we know from experience that there is a lot involved! Certainly an interesting and challenging course – so glad I had a buggy!
