A review of our Women & Golf event on 8 July at The Melbourne Club, Brocket Hall

Women & Golf held a golf day at The Melbourne Club at Brocket Hall in the lovely Hertfordshire countryside this month. Teeing it up at The Melbourne Course, 64 players competed on a beautiful sunny day in picturesque surroundings.

Golf at The Melbourne Club

Brocket Hall, 1st tee, 18th green, Broadwater Lake at The Melbourne Club

At the heart of the Brocket Hall Estate, The Melbourne Club offers world class golf facilities in an iconic setting.

Brocket Hall was built in 1760. Once home to two British Prime Ministers and a favourite country retreat for royalty. The two courses are named after the Prime Ministers who used to live here: William Lamb (2nd Viscount Melbourne) and Henry John Temple (3rd Viscount Palmerston).

The Melbourne course was the first course to be laid out in the grounds of Brocket Hall. Designed by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark, it opened for play in 1992. Many people believe that this is one of the finest designs from BBC television's voice of golf. The layout follows the natural contours of the undulating 18th century parkland and the course belies its tender age.

First & 10th Tee Photocall

It was great to welcome back some familiar faces and say hello to players who were attending their first Women & Golf event.

It really was a geographically diverse playing field - teams from 27 clubs and 13 counties competed including Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Kent, Middlesex, Suffolk & Surrey.

Diane from Ashley Wood in Dorset takes the accolades for furthest distance travelled (130 miles)!

A ferry ride to finish

Brocket Hall & 18th green at The Melbourne Course

The 18th Hole of The Melbourne Course can be the ruination of many a good scorecard. Delighted by a beautiful vista of Brocket Hall, your mind quickly turns to the watery expanse in front of you. Many players thought long and hard about laying up. Many a ball splashed and crashed.

Fortunately, the players were treated to a calming ferry ride across the Broadwater Lake to compensate.

After Golf in the Oak Room at the Melbourne Club

Buffet lunch in the Oak Room at The Melbourne Club

The players enjoyed a beautifully presented late buffet lunch (with a selection of enticing desserts) in the Oak Room. The room overlooks the putting green and Broadwater Lake. You can also see the picturesque Auberge du Lac restaurant across the water.

After the round, the players commented what a tough challenge the course was but very enjoyable with magnificent views and the course in amazing condition.
