- 1 King Bed Estate
We stayed in 1 King Estate Room with views of the beautifully manicured gardens.
The room has a luxurious feeling and a four poster bed which was super comfortable.
The room has plenty of space and large wardrobes. There are complimentary tea and coffee making facilities (Nespresso coffee maker) with a well stocked minibar and large flat screen TV. Luxury toiletries can be found in the shower room, and there's a bathrobe and slippers to relax in during your stay.
We loved the large windows looking out onto the gardens. Stay in the Park rooms and you get a great view of the golf course.
The Estate Rooms are a little walk from the main hotel reception via internal corridors but closely situated to the Spa and more importantly golf course and Clubhouse.
Cottages
Combining the elegance of a stay in the main hotel but with the privacy of a place to call your own, the self-catering cottages are the ideal home away from home.
Nestled in the woodlands of the estate, these cottages are just a stone's throw away from the golf course.
Choose between one or two bedroom options, with each providing an abundance of space, unique décor, and self-catering facilities. Each cottage is equipped with a refrigerator, oven, stove and microwave, alongside a fully stocked inventory of kitchen equipment and utensils.
From the historic Gardener's Cottage with its stone walls, to units featuring a private sauna and secluded gardens, how you choose to stay is up to you.
Cottage guests can choose to self-cater, order from the casual dining menu or, dine in the restaurant or more informal golf clubhouse and terrace. A takeaway food service from the bar is available in the high season and free food delivery is also available on site. There’s something for everyone.
Parking is available for the cottages, with the majority of spaces directly outside each cottage. The cottages are between 3-10 minutes walk from the main hotel or golf clubhouse.
Food
The food at Schloss Roxburghe is sourced sustainably, ingredient by ingredient, farm by farm, from the best local produce available. Where possible, they source from their very own estate. Scotland‘s natural larder of game, dairy products, fish, fruit, and vegetables is the chief factor in being able to create their delicious culinary delights.
Breakfast is served in Charlie's restaurant overlooking the gardens. A large selection of cereals and fruit plus continental breakfast is on a self-service basis. There is also a hot breakfast menu that includes the infamous scottish kippers but more modern dishes such as avocado on toast with poached egg.
There are two options for dinner - Charlie's - Scottish Bistronomy in relaxed surroundings - or Sunlaws - the ultimate dining experience, with exquisitely crafted dishes designed to excite the palate. Choose from a traditional à la carte menu or a 5-course tasting menu,
Sample of food on offer at Charlie's
In Charlie's, we enjoyed a melt-in-the-mouth venison loin, beetroot risotto with an unusual addition of sour cherries and big juicy scallops. There's a substantial wine list and some mouth-watering desserts.
The State Lounge Room is a lovely place for a post-meal digestif by the open fire. You can also have a cocktail before dinner there. Or if you want something lighter for dinner there is Lounge Bites menu.
Don't forget to visit Bar 1745 - a whisky and gin heaven. Whisky tastings are available. Expertly guided, it gives you a chance to learn, discover and share in the joy that is 'the water of life'.
In the year 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie spent a night at the historic Roxburghe Estate and, upon departure, planted a white rose bush in the grounds. Today, the sophisticated and charming Bar 1745 serves the memory of this Scottish icon. Steeped in history, and with its roaring open fire, it offers a perfect place to relax, recharge your batteries, and bring a successful evening to a stylish close.
Spa
Located on the ground floor of the Estate House, the state of the art SCHLOSS Spa is the perfect balance of peace and calm.
There's an outdoor heated infinity pool, aroma sauna, hot tub, embedded Finnish dry sauna, plunge pool and fully equipped fitness suite. What more could you ask for after a day on the golf course?
Towels are provided at the Spa reception desk and you are welcome to bring the robe from your room. There are lovely changing rooms with showers if you prefer to change at the Spa.
There is no food or drink available in the Spa except for water and herbal teas which is a nice touch.
We didn't have time to take advantage of the ESPA spa treatments but their experienced therapists provide a range of facials and massages to pamper both your body and soul. You can also give your nails the 5-star treatment with manicures or pedicures available.
A perfect post-round treat!

Golf
Designed by the internationally renowned golf course architect Dave Thomas, the Roxburghe is an outstanding championship course.
The picturesque, free-draining course provides an enjoyable game designed to suit all standards of golfer.
There is a wonderful mix of holes using the natural contours of the landscape, the mature woodland edge and the scenic views.
Each hole is a hole in itself and as the course meanders through the woodland and valleys of the Teviot hills, it is grand lay out with some great holes. A classic modern parkland.
The signature par 5 14th hole, ‘the Viaduct’, is flanked by the river Teviot. It commands a wonderful position from the elevated tee with the green framed by the famous Roxburgh Viaduct.
The Roxburghe Golf Club has been voted 6th best golf experience in Scotland, by readers of the country’s biggest-selling golf title, Bunkered.
Favourite holes
4th - Par 3 - 158 yards
A simple hole. But danger lurks with water on right and well placed bunkers either side of the green.
5th - Par 5 - 468 yards
An elegant Par 5 where you meander down the fairway. The fairway is narrow and two large bunkers give you food for thought on your second shot.
10th - Par 4 - 338 yards
An elevated tee plays down to a dog leg fairway. Don't overshoot the green or you could find yourself salmon fishing instead in the River Teviot.
14th - Par 5 - 475 yards
"Roxburghe‘s signature hole, The Viaduct, is my favourite 14th tee in Scotland. It‘s such a beautiful
hole in such a glorious setting.” - Sam Torrance OBE
Spectacular hole that does not disappoint.
There are actually more holes that I could have listed and the turn from 14, 15 and 16 plus the valley hole at 17 were all memorable - check out the Course Map.
Conditions
The course was in fabulous condition - tee boxes, fairways and greens. Loved the way the course meandered around the countryside, with amazing views across the Teviot Hills and beyond.
The course is not particularly long from the red tees but there are some long walks from green to tee - check out the Course Scorecard. Buggies are available to hire so be sure to pre-book. Watch out for some very strategically placed (and deep) bunkers on many of the holes. Some serious course management is needed.
Facilities
One last thing to mention is the practice facilities. The putting green and chipping area are situated around the clubhouse and in front of the manor house. The recent addition of an 8-bay covered driving range with Toptracer technology in each bay is the final piece in this five-star golf offering.
Spike Bar
The Spike Bar in the Clubhouse provides a welcoming atmosphere for everyone and is the perfect location for groups of golfers to enjoy some hearty grub after a day out on the course. You can enjoy hearty snacks including burgers, breakfast rolls, salads and sandwiches or enjoy a reviving drink after your round.
Other Activities
For those who are not golfers, there are alternatives. The Spa, Pool, a spot of salmon fishing, fishing, clay pigeon shooting, cycling and walking are all available.
The verdict
Do you need a better excuse to stay and play golf in Scotland? Great golfing and spa facilities, fantastic accommodation, and excellent food.
We didn't experience the brand new cottages but this is a perfect base for golf - the accommodation is ideal for a group of female golfers, a couples golf trip or a family holiday. The golf course is in excellent condition and a real treat for parkland course lovers.
You can stay for a short or long golfing getaway. It is also a great place to stay en route to some of the excellent golf courses in East Lothian or Northumberland.
It’s a ‘yes’ from the team at Women & Golf!
