History

Original owner

Dutch entrepreneur Sander van Gelder, renowned past owner of Portugal’s Vale do Lobo resort, initially spearheaded the development of Bernardus Golf. However, progress stalled when van Gelder stepped away from the project due to ill-health. In 2016, prominent Dutch businessman Robert van der Wallen (founder of Brand Loyalty) stepped in, transforming it into a high-profile undertaking.

Famous architect undertakes transformation

With additional land acquired, acclaimed architect Kyle Phillips, noted for his work on the Lage Vuursche course near Utrecht, was engaged to bring the vision to life. The site, an ancient sandy plain, underwent a remarkable transformation. The topsoil was excavated to reveal a sandy sub-layer beneath. The extracted sand was redistributed across the course, creating ideal playing conditions while the removed topsoil was repurposed to fill the mining voids.

To accelerate the natural aesthetic, vast amounts of native heather were transplanted, lending the course an authentic heathland feel. Mature specimen trees dotted throughout further enhanced the sense of maturity and natural integration.

The course incorporates water hazards strategically, particularly on the front nine where lakes influence play on holes 2, 7, and 8. A smaller pond on the 17th feeds a ditch that runs alongside the 18th fairway, adding an element of drama near the finish. Bunkers are a standout design feature, with rugged, steep-faced sand traps sculpted into ridges that challenge golfers both visually and strategically.

Bernardus is divided into three distinct areas: a central section housing the cutting-edge clubhouse, a vast practice facility, and an eight-room lodge near key holes 1, 9, 17, and 18; and two outer areas—one with water-heavy holes (2–8) and another with drier terrain (10–16).

Championship venue

In 2021 and 2022, Bernardus was the proud host of the Dutch Open and in 2023 of the KLM Open. The investment of approximately €50 million was on full display for top professionals, spectators, and a global television audience.

In 2026, Bernardus will be the proud host of the world's biggest female golf tournament, which will be held in the Netherlands for the first time.
