In this month's golf travel blog, Golf Travel Group's James Healy took a trip to Egypt to Somabay, here he shares his experience.

Recently, I embarked on a delightful trip to Somabay, Egypt, and stayed at the fabulous Cascades Golf Resort, SPA & Thalasso. From the moment we arrived, the service, accessibility, and overall vibe of the resort were nothing short of spectacular. We were treated not only to the current offerings but also to the exciting plans for the future!

The golfing experience at Somabay Golf was out of this world. Playing on the Gary Player course, fondly known as the 'Pebble Beach of Africa,' was truly special. The course boasts two stunning stretches of holes along the Red Sea and with the ever changing wind direction, a different test each time you play. The condition of the course and the impeccable service provided by the team are commendable. One of my favourite perks was the continuous supply of much-needed ice-cold flannels throughout the round, a refreshing touch that made a significant difference.

Perfect year-round golf destination

In addition to the remarkable 18-hole course, the resort boasts a top-tier golf academy that ranks among the best in the world. The floodlit par-3 course, with its sloping greens, challenging bunkers, and multiple water features, is a must-see. For coaches, the short game practice area is a haven, offering over 25 zones to practice various shot types. A standout feature of the academy is the 360 platform overlooking a green reminiscent of Sawgrass’ 17th – a perfect spot to spend hours honing your skills with friends and family. Hats off to James Edwards and Tim Lobb for creating such an extraordinary facility!

Beyond the golf course

Our mornings of golf were followed by a plethora of activities at the resort. From padel and tennis to go-karting and paintballing, there’s no shortage of fun. One of the most surreal experiences was boat golf at the marina - hitting golf balls into the Red Sea and then diving into crystal-clear waters to retrieve them, quite the adventure!

The beach is lined with multiple bars and restaurants offering delicious food and excellent service. It’s also a breeze to get around the resort, with the fleet of pimped-out buggies always ready to take you from the hotel to the marina.

Don't just take my word for it

Lauren Hearfield aka LaurenGolfs_ on Instagram was also on the trip and had this to say about the resort:

“I would highly recommend Somabay as a golf trip, it had so many fun activities that can be enjoyed by everyone, including, boat golf, snorkelling and the spa. But the main asset, of course, was the incredible golfing facilities. The course is one of the most picturesque courses I’ve ever played and you could spend all day on the 27 zone short game area working on your skills. The par 3 course can be played day or night too and the island green hole-in-one challenge with a few drinks as the sun goes down is the perfect way to bring out your competitive side. The food was exceptional and the staff couldn’t have been more friendly, I’m already looking forward to going back to Somabay.’’

If you haven’t considered a golf holiday in Egypt, this is your sign to do so! Somabay is a golfing paradise that promises unforgettable experiences. You won’t regret it!
