High Post Golf Club celebrates longest-serving member Margaret Thompson's 100th Birthday
High Post Golf Club recently held a heartwarming celebration to honour its longest-serving member, Margaret Thompson, who turned 100 years old this October. Margaret joined High Post Golf Club in 1970, served as Lady Captain, and remains one of the club’s most cherished members.
A celebratory lunch was held at the club in her honour, attended by 50 ladies, including both current and former members, who gathered to mark this remarkable milestone. Margaret, who was Lady Captain in 1989/1990, has always been deeply involved in club life and continues to take an active interest in its activities.
Her presence is so valued that she was recently invited to the Hezlet final at Brokenhurst, even though High Post was not competing. The organisers insisted it "wouldn't be the same without her", and Margaret, joined by her friend Viv, enjoyed a lovely afternoon with tea and cake.
Members come together to celebrate Margaret's 100th Birthday
On the day of her birthday celebration, 29 members participated in a morning Bowmaker competition, with some friendly rivalry and excellent play setting the tone for a memorable day. The event was blessed with kind weather and even a rare appearance of blue sky.
The dining room was decorated festively with balloons, sprinkles, and displays of photographs capturing Margaret’s journey with the club. High Post’s Lady Captain, Maureen Garfoot, thoughtfully provided each table with interesting facts about Margaret’s life, creating an atmosphere of nostalgia and admiration.
A delicious cake was baked specially for the occasion, and Margaret blew out the candles – though the club sensibly decided not to attempt lighting 100 candles in total!
During the celebration, Margaret delighted guests with stories from her life, including a touching memory of her father winning an Olympic medal just two years before her birth. She also reminisced about the many Mondays spent at the club enjoying lunch with her dear friend Cybil Parsons and a “drop of sherry”.
A real community spirit at High Post
In a special presentation, Lady Captain Maureen gifted Margaret an orchid. Margaret expressed her gratitude and fondly shared that the flower was one of her favourites, adding that she would think of this joyous day whenever she admired it at home in Amesbury.
The event brought together long-time friends and former players, filling the room with laughter and lively conversation. Thanks to the dedicated staff, the day was a seamless success, reflecting the warm and enduring community that makes High Post Golf Club so special.
For Margaret Thompson, 100 years is not merely a number but a testament to a life filled with friendship, dedication, and love for her club community. High Post Golf Club is proud to celebrate her legacy and looks forward to many more shared memories.
Happy Birthday to Margaret from everyone at Women & Golf!
