North Hants were crowned 2024 English Women’s Champion Club after a dramatic final day at Hessle Golf Club.
Shifnal (Shropshire) looked set to take home the crown after Alexandra Ling’s marvellous performance on the final day, with two eagles in her level-par round, and Fern Clark’s 83 giving them an overall score of +18.
However, North Hants’ Aimee Paterson 78 (+5) and Georgina Carter 79 (+6) saw their two counting scores take the Hampshire club to a final total of +18 as well.
With the teams tied at the top, it came down to the aggregate score of all three players in each team, and it was Lily Walker’s 83 which proved crucial in beating Ann Peters’ 92 to help North Hants pip Shifnal.
North Hants' win means they qualify to represent England Golf in the European Ladies' Club Trophy at Golf Club Welten, Slovakia from October 3-5.
Paterson said: “We’re all in a lot of shock at the moment so we can’t really speak, we can’t really believe it! We’ve been playing a lot of golf, with seven rounds in four days last week in Liverpool, so we’ve had chance to acclimatise to the north.”
Teammate Carter said: “I almost had a hole-in-one today on the 2nd where I stuck it to just a few inches. I had about three eagle opportunities too but the greens were so difficult. None of us were prepared for the rain today, it caught us completely off guard. We were running to the cars after the 9th to grab our umbrellas!”
North Hants Ladies Captain Frances Crummay added: “It’s absolutely fantastic to win, it’s a great reflection of the ladies’ game that we have at North Hants.”
Willesley Park (Leicestershire) were joint-leaders heading into the last day, in part thanks to Joanne Morris-Bourne’s seventh career hole-in-one, but they finished seven shots back of the winners in tied-3rd alongside Hindhead (Surrey).
West Lancashire, Huddersfield (Yorkshire) and Sundridge Park (Kent) were a further two shots back in tied-5th.
