Discover essential short game golf tips in Episode 5 of our Up and Down Series. Improve your putting stroke with this simple putting drill

Welcome to Episode Five of The Up and Down Series, where we dive into essential short game golf tips and techniques. In this episode, learn a drill that will help you to commit to the follow through when putting, ultimately improving your putting stroke with PGA Advanced Professional Alice Davis from Parkstone Golf Club.

Putting drill for stroke length

If you find yourself not committing to the follow through on your putts, then watch this episode of The Up And Down Series.

When we're putting, we want our stroke to be a pendulum, so the same length back and the same length forward.

A really common thing I see, however, is a long backswing and then people panicking and decelerating through their putts and stopping quite quickly and abruptly.

Setting up the putting drill

To set up the drill, we have two tees set up roughly the width that we would like our stroke to be. So when we are putting, we are going to want the putter to come back to one tee and through to the other.

Putting drill set-up
Place two tees in the ground roughly the width that you want your stroke to be

When you are practising this drill, if you are varying the length of the putts, you may need to change the length of the tees as when we are putting, we want to make sure our pendulum varies in length, not the swing getting faster.

By having a more consistent stroke, you will find that you have more control over your putts and ultimately will see better results with your putting. You may also want to check out Episode Two of the Up And Down Series where I discuss pace control when putting.

Thank you to Parkstone Golf Club for the use of their practice areas to film The Up And Down Series.
