Crisply struck iron shots are what golfers dream of! Many ladies struggle with gaining enough height to get a ball to stop on a green, whilst some find that all their irons go the same distance. Here’s how you can improve with those irons and find your scores tumbling as a result.
There is the old saying that we want to hit the little ball THEN the big ball … to make contact with the golf ball first but still brush planet earth is of utmost importance. Generally golfers don’t make decent contact with the grass under the ball, (if any at all) and therefore never expose the ball to the loft on the clubface. There are some set-up checks that can be made to ensure you get back to the world!
Posture
The problem is usually posture. This set-up is far from athletic and many women seem to want to tuck their bums in, so miss out on those all-important angles.
Feel as though you’re going to run somewhere. You should be tipped from your hips and your weight planted onto the balls of your feet, as if returning a serve in tennis.
As a mini check, ensure you can tap your heels up and down. If you can tap your toes, you are sat back and will lack balance and rock as you swing. That feeling of being ready and grounded should massively increase your confidence.

To maximise power, a balanced finish position will help you to feel in control and it will tell you whether you have truly committed to that shot and transferred your weight onto your front foot. Don’t let your mind wander to what a particular shot is worth, simply focus on where you want to hit the ball and send it there.
