Golf de Poniente – The Terrifying 10th

Universally considered to be one of Mallorca’s best designed golf courses, Golf de Poniente opened in 1978 and is the product of Mallorca architect, Pepe Gancedo. The 18-hole, 6430m, par 72 course, combines woodland, Mediterranean flora, seven lakes, sweeping terrain, wide fairways and quick greens.

The challenging par four 10th hole terrifies golfers at the tee. The hole is a favourite for competitive golfers, as it does not initially appear that difficult. However, an out of bounds challenge on the right, as well as a lot of water to navigate, makes it a great hole for visitors to achieve their par.

As well as being a challenging course, the views from the course, particularly the 8th and 16th holes, are breathtaking, and the club boasts an excellent reputation. Facilities include a terrace restaurant which has been restored to a rustic Mallorcan style according to the design of Ignacio de Gregorio.

The four star Son Caliu Hotel Spa Oasis offers a seven night package including a buffet breakfast, free spa entrance and five green fees at either Real Golf Bendinat, Poniente Golf or Santa Ponsa, from €685 per person based on two people sharing a standard room. Golf Santa Ponsa 1 – Follow in Seve’s Footsteps

Host of the European Tour six times, Golf Santa Ponsa 1 was the Calvia region’s first golf course and the second in Majorca. Located in the stunning four star Golf Santa Ponsa Resort which has three exclusive golf courses, Santa Ponsa 1 is the only one open to the general public to enjoy.

Designed by the late Italian architect Folco Nardi and opened in 1977, the course is open and uncomplicated, with fairways amongst the most generous on the island.  Situated on one of the best estates in the municipality, with beautiful views of Puig Galatzó, it is a long course of 6543 metres with 18 holes (Par 72); the 10th hole (Par 5) is one of the longest in Europe with 590 meters.

The course has been host to the European Tour six times with players such as Severiano Ballesteros, Bernard Langer, José Mª Olazábal, Miguel A. Jiménez, Jesper Partnevick, Lee Westwood, Colin Montgomerie, Ian Woosnam, and Vijay Singh all playing the course.

Golf Santa Ponsa 1 has a superb shape with several doglegs and an intelligent use of water, particularly at the dramatic par-4 16th. At 437 yards, this sliding left-to-right dogleg is difficult enough, but it skirts an enormous lake on the right for the entire length of the hole.

Hotel Santa Ponsa Golf offers seven nights in a double room for two people with breakfast, five green fees (three in Golf Santa Ponsa, and one in Bendinat Golf), hire car (category B) for four days with insurance from €888 per person, including VAT. These rates are valid from 23/02/14 to 22/11/14. For more information visit http://www.hotelgolfsantaponsa.com
