American Amy Olson leads the way by one-stroke at the end of Round 1 of the U.S. Women's Open.

Well, it turns out that the 2020 U.S. Women's Open was definitely worth the wait.

Originally scheduled for June before the pandemic hit, the first 18 holes at Champions Golf Club was full of action.

For the first time ever in the 75-year history of the tournament, the major is being played over not one but two courses - the Cypress Creek and Jackrabbit courses.

With $5.5 billion dollars is up for grabs - the largest purse in women's golf - these are the top stories from Round 1.

Amy Olson leads after amazing ace

America Amy Olson is in a familiar position today.

The star was the Round 1 overnight leader of the AIG Women's Open back in August, and yet again she's leading after the first 18 holes of a major tournament.

Helping her secure her one-shot lead was an epic hole-in-one on her 7th hole.

Striking her ball perfectly with an 8-iron from 139 yards on the 16th hole, it was her fifth ace and her second in a competition.

“The pin was tucked. It was just more on the right side of the green with the wind kind of coming from the right,” she said.

“I hit a fade to try to hold the wind, and it landed two paces short of the flag, had some good spin on it and just trickled in. We saw the whole thing, which was fun.”

But with last year's AIG Women's Open winner Hikano Shibuno and others hot on heels and just one stroke back, Amy is hoping her excellent form continues on into Round 2.

“I hit the ball really well off the tee,” she said.

“I gave myself some good chances for birdie, but I really made some putts that I definitely wasn't necessarily thinking birdie on, and that helped. And then obviously the hole-in-one was kind of the highlight of the round. I was pretty excited to be able to do that at the U.S. Open.”

Meanwhile, KLPGA Tour player Yu Jin Sung also got a hole in one. She aced the fourth hole, from 169 yards with a 5-iron.

Charley Hull hangs just two back

Tied with six other players including AIG Women's Open champ Sophia Popov, Charley Hull sits just two strokes off the lead going into Round 2.

Shooting a two-under 69, her round on the Jackrabbit course included four birdies.

She's out today at 2.17pm UK time with 2020 OMEGA Dubai Moonlight Classic winner Minjee Lee and Korea's Hae Ran Ryu.

Can she keep up the pace and get another win this weekend? We think she's due one to be honest.

Play resumes today at 1pm and you can watch all the action on Sky Sport Golf.
