Colin Montgomerie teed off the inaugural Hero Cycles Golf Cup at the Delhi Golf Club, India. The first day of the event featured an Inter-School tournament, junior clinic and a charity fundraiser.

Around 50 school kids from Mumbai, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Dehradun and Delhi-NCR region enjoyed playing alongside Monty who revealed some of his golfing secrets.

Amongst the nationally ranked juniors were Shubham Narain (ranked 2nd on IGU’s order of merit list, 15-17 age category), Aadil Bedi (ranked 8th on IGU’s order of merit list, 13-14 age category), Gaurika Bishnoi (ranked 5th on IGU’s merit list, 15-17 age category), Seher Atwal (ranked 4th on IGU’s merit list, 15-17 age category), Nishtha Madan (ranked 8th on IGU’s merit list, 13-14 age category) and the 10-year-old golf prodigy Shubham Jaglan (IGU’s merit leader, 9-10 age category). The Inter-School tournament has been played in a two member team format with individual prizes in various age groups.

Colin Montgomerie said, “Meeting the Indian juniors and sharing my perspective on the game was a great experience at this prestigious club. The initiative of creating future champions by Hero Cycles would hopefully be a positive step in developing junior golf in India and I am surely delighted to contribute to the effort.”

“It’s been an eye opener to see the standard of the junior’s golf here today. Some of them have immense talent and unless we nurture them, it will disappear. I saw some very special youngsters and the kind of queries they had, it was incredible,” added Montgomerie.

On being asked about his advice to the juniors, Colin said “You have to have the passion and the desire. I saw that in the questions some of the juniors asked today. It’s amazing when you play golf in Britain, Scotland, Europe and America but today I have realised that It’s incredible to play this game in India with the youngsters. I also saw the girls playing so well and it’s wonderful that many girls are playing so well.”

Among schools being represented in the Hero Cycles Golf Cup were The Doon School (Dehradun), Sanskriti (Delhi), Cathedral and John Connon (Mumbai), St. John High School (Chandigarh), Modern Barakhamba Road (Delhi), Vasant Valley (Delhi), The Shriram School, Aravali (Gurgaon), Delhi Public School (Gurgaon), Army Public School (Delhi) to name a few.

Keeping the growth of junior golf in mind, we have conceptualized the Hero Cycles Golf Cup and we are delighted that juniors have travelled to play from all across India. We wanted to give the youngsters an inspiring leader who could light the spark in them and we found a hero in Colin Montgomerie and we are going to continue this association for a minimum of three years.”
