The average number of rounds played across the UK in June was up by 70 percent compared to the same month last year.
We previously reported that throughout May, an average of 40 percent more rounds of golf were played compared to the same period in 2019. It was even up by 50 percent in some parts in the South, and we’re pleased to announce that this upward trend seems to be continuing.
Proving that it wasn’t just a fleeting surge as golf clubs began to open again, Sports Marketing Surveys (SMS) have collected data that shows 70 percent more rounds of golf were played in June 2020 compared to June 2019.
That’s an absolutely incredible increase and it’s fantastic news for the industry.
Further figures from SMS suggest that this increase could partly be down to the fact that most golfers feel extremely safe playing the game.
Out of a survey of 1,500 male and female golfers across the UK, 76 percent rated the safety of playing golf within social distancing guidelines as either nine or 10 out of 10.
In contrast, only 4 percent said they would feel just as safe playing team sports and only 3 percent said the same about going to the gym.
Another encouraging finding is that 45 percent of core golfers will try to encourage more of their family to play golf post-COVID.
Half the golfers asked also said they would be more likely to buy from their local pro than they were before lockdown.
It’s all encouraging stuff and we love that so many people are showing a new appreciation for the game of golf.
