Cambridge Meridian Golf Club in Toft, has just become one of Cambridgeshire’s ‘Get into Golf’ centres and is backing the drive to encourage more people to take up the sport.
The ‘Get into Golf’ scheme is run by the Cambridgeshire Golf Partnership and aims to make it even easier for would-be players to give golf a go and move on to club membership in the future.
Cambridge Meridian Golf Club is the latest Get into Golf centre in the county, joining Nene Park, On Par Ely, Girton, Ramsey and Cambridge Driving Range.
All Get into Golf centres offer low-cost beginner coaching, starting at four group lessons for just £24, and a player pathway taking new golfers from novice to full club member. The project supports the national Get into Golf’ campaign, which inspires newcomers and returners to the game to get playing.
Cambridge Meridian Golf course is one of just ten courses worldwide to straddle the Meridian line, hence the name. PGA Professional at the club, Adrienne Engleman said: “Shortly after being appointed Head Professional at Cambridge Meridian Golf Club, I contacted the County Golf Partnership to ask for their help in assisting me with developing new golfing opportunities here at Cambridge Meridian.
With their support, the golf club has now been accredited as one of six Get into golf centres in Cambridgeshire. This prestigious status enables me as a PGA Golf Coach to offer low cost coaching sessions and it is my hope that through Get into golf initiatives we can encourage an abundance of new recruits to the game.”
Jenny Wisson, Co-owner of Cambridge Meridian Golf Club added: “With the combination of Adrienne's golf coaching expertise and the County Golf Partnership's knowledge and resources, it is our hope at Cambridge Meridian Golf Club that we will all see a significant increase in participation. Thereafter, we at the golf club will endeavour to play an integral part by facilitating a pathway to ensure the retention of those new golfers.”
County Development Officer Marc Smith remarked: “I’m delighted that Cambridge Meridian has joined our Get into Golf centres. These clubs offer a step-by-step introduction to golf and possible club membership – and they prove that it’s has never been easier to enjoy the health and social benefits that the sport can bring.”
