Golf courses and driving ranges in England must close during the new lockdown, coming into force immediately from today (January 4).
Golf clubs in England, including both indoor and outdoor facilities, must close immediately following the announcement that the country is entering a third lockdown.
A statement from England Golf has been released detailing the new rules.
"Golf clubs, golf facilities – both indoor and outdoor – and driving ranges will be required to close during this full lockdown. As such, coaching will not be permitted.
"Golf retailers will be able to operate a click-and-collect service where goods are pre-ordered and either collected off the premises or delivered."
This news comes as a huge blow after it was revealed earlier today that golf courses in Scotland WOULD stay open during the new lockdown.
The statement from England Golf also went on to detail how the governing body for amateur golf was surprised and disappointed by the decision to close the sport.
"England Golf – as part of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Golf along with other leading industry bodies – is extremely disappointed with the news, having made a strong case in recent months to keep golf open during the national lockdowns and in the regional tier system.
"It is with great regret that we share this news with you, but please be assured that we will continue to make the case for golf to reopen whenever possible."
The new restrictions are expected to be in place until March.
Addressing the nation at 8pm this evening, the Prime Minister said: “I want to say to everyone right across the UK that I know how tough this is.
“And I know how frustrated you are and I know that you have had more than enough of Government guidance about defeating this virus. But now, more than ever, we must pull together.”
The Prime Minister warned “the weeks ahead will be the hardest yet”, but “with every jab that goes into our arms, we are tilting the odds against Covid and in favour of the British people”.
He added: “Thanks to the miracle of science, not only is the end in sight but we know exactly how we will get there.”
We want to encourage anyone is struggling with this latest news to reach out to a friend or the Women & Golf team if you need someone to talk to.
Hopefully we can all get back to playing as soon as possible.
