Learn how to shape the flight of the golf ball by following these tips from PGA Coach Samantha Head.
Women generally hit the ball straight, but there are times when you might be faced with a situation that requires a shaped shot. Here are some simple tips on how to play a fade (left to right) and a draw (right to left).
Left to right (fade)
A left to right shot for a right-handed golfer is called a fade or slice.
- Aim your clubface at the target.
- Line your feet, hips and shoulders on the line you want to start the ball, which would be left of the target.
- Take a neutral grip and make a swing along your feet and shoulder line. This will feel like you are cutting across the ball, but this is how the ball attains its curve, beginning on the line of your feet and then finishing at the target.
- It’s important to feel like you are exaggerating the swing path to ensure the curve will happen.
Right to left (draw)
A right to left shot for a right-handed golfer is called a draw or a hook.
- Aim your clubface at the target.
- Line your feet, hips and shoulders on the line you want to start the ball, which would be right of the target.
- Make a swing along your feet and shoulder line – this will feel as though you are swinging in to out.
- The ball will begin to fly towards your aim and curve towards the target. Stand up in your posture slightly, as this will help to flatten out your swing and encourage the draw/hook ball flight.
