Women & Golf Member Helen Constantinou reviews the Seed Golf SD-X1 golf ball
Review by Helen Constantinou - Essendon Golf Club
Having won a fantastic box of Seed Golf balls at a recent golf day hosted by Women & Golf, I was kindly asked to review the balls. Through no other reason than sheer ignorance, I realised, after playing the game for well over 20 years, that I knew very little about golf balls, other than what I usually like to play with.
With 1.2 billion balls manufactured each year (the first one in Scotland were actually made from wood!) spanning a huge variation in price, quite clearly, the market is a minefield. However, we always seem to know that Titleist Pro V1’s rule the roost at the top end. And quite often, upon finding a Top Flight in the long grass, we may well pass without even considering to add it to the myriad of balls collected along the way. That’s because stats say the average golfer loses about two balls per round! So, most don’t make the suggested average life of about 7 rounds of golf before they need replacing!
Initial Thoughts
I have to say, I do like to start my competition rounds of golf with a new ball - I’m a 55 year old female, I took up golf quite late, but coming from a hockey background, I have a fairly good eye for a small ball. I’m a fairly aggressive player - regularly driving the ball well in excess of 200 yards - so my balls do tend to scuff up quite easily. I have always had a preference for mid-range Titleist balls and having a handicap of around 12, I have begun to feel some difference between different brands of ball. I’m sure like most players, I definitely would opt for a softer ball this time of year-summer, and this is where I was most impressed with the Seed Golf balls.
The Test
In terms of packaging and upon opening, I really liked the option given with four strips of ball - 12 balls per box - all with different numbers. The colourway of the box gives a natural feel of elegance, albeit, I found the description “The Pro X1” a little close to a Titleist rival. The balls have an instant squeaky grip - almost sticky feel as you take them from the packet, with really quite a shallow feel to the dimples - but nevertheless a full covering which obviously sends the ball further.
I played several rounds with the Seed Golf ball, both for fun and in a competition setting and was truly impressed by its all round performance. I thought the ball flight was true and I got good distance upon driving. Maybe the only playing criticism I had was that maybe it was just a little too receptive around the greens. I like to play in and attack the pins and on a couple of shots, I noticed I came up short and my ball checked remarkably quickly. However, the ball putted well and gave a good soft but true feel off my Fisher putter. This week’s stableford produced 39 points using the Seed Golf ball, so that bought a big smile to my face!
I think the design of the ball, with the target logo is rather appropriate, and there is a nice subtle line marker to the opposite side.
The Verdict
In summary, I thought the Seed ball was an all round good performance ball. I think due to the nature of my game, the ball may need replacing more often due to scuffing, but understanding these balls sit in a comfortable price band accessible to a wider audience, I would be very happy to invest in this product, and I have already shared a couple of my winning balls with friends!.
Would I recommend it?
Yes!
