La Hacienda Links Golf Course offers the best panoramic views in Spanish golf

Women & Golf visited a wonderful golf course recently - La Hacienda Links Golf Resort. Situated in a stunning position overlooking the Mediterranean and the iconic Rock of Gibraltar, the NEW Links course features one of the best panoramic views in Spanish golf.

History of La Hacienda Links Course

Originally designed by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark, the par-72, 18-hole championship layout first opened in 1992 and is the only Links-style course in Southern Europe.

In 2021, it was the subject of a major upgrade and renovation by acclaimed American architect Kurtis Bowman, being transformed into a modern and sustainable golf course.

The majestic 5th

The La Hacienda Golf Course

The 18-hole course provides something for every golfer. There are a mix of generous fairways, natural challenges and rolling undulations. We definitely recommend a few practice putts before you head out as the greens ran quick. You will want to make use of a buggy which is available to hire if required.

The beautiful 9th
The charming 10th

The breathtaking scenery is a real selling point of the course. Plus the fantastic quality of the course and the greens, all of which have been maintained to a very high standard. At times it really felt like millionaires golf.

The risk and reward hole - 7th

Of particular note was actually away from the fairways. The newly opened halfway house on La Hacienda Links Course is quite something to behold. Emma and I commented that it is the most beautiful one we have every seen. You would almost be happy to finish your round after nine holes and spend the afternoon drinking on the terrace.

We found out later that the facility is open in the evening to local residents. A truly stunning addition to the course and could be a reason alone to play the Links Course.

Holes to watch at La Hacienda Links Course

There are some amazing holes at La Hacienda. You are constantly exposed to the beautiful coastline and the Rock of Gibraltar on the horizon. Despite the close proximity of new residences being built it is a very tranquil place to play.

Memorable holes for me:

5th - Par 5 and nearly 500 yards off the reds. An elevated tee shot to a narrow downward fairway with a lake on the right. A decision then as to whether you lay up or go over the brook. It's still a long way to go after that - a fairway wood to an elevated green.

7th - has everything. A long Par 5, a fairway wood into the unknown, and a decision of whether to lay up before the lake.

17th - an innocuous Par 3 of 100 yards. A bunker strategically placed at the front of the green suggests a shot to the left. Only when you get to the green do you see a gentle slope helping you get on the green if you'd played to the right.

Watch out for one of the largest putting-surface areas in Spain, shared by the 5th & 13th greens.

The Clubhouse at La Hacienda Golf Club

The clubhouse has a large restaurant room and a spectacular open terrace with views of the Strait of Gibraltar.
The menu is inspired by the freshness of the Mediterranean, and the menu finds a nice balance between quality traditional cuisine and modern and creative cuisine, a perfect combination of a relaxed and sophisticated offering at the same time, which makes it an unforgettable experience.

La Hacienda Links Golf Course - Course Feedback

And what did we think of the course?

Emma: "Quite possibly one of the most beautiful courses I have had the pleasure of playing. The views were breathtaking and the course was in great condition.

"The halfway house was a fantastic surprise and wish we had had more time to spend there. A real must visit.

"I really enjoyed the par 3s, nice to get in some birdie opportunities. The course was tough and the greens tricky but rather than put me off, it just makes me want to come back and tackle it again!"

Jane: "Had no idea what to expect but thought views of the Mediterranean sea would be included. An absolute treat. Fantastic views of sea and Rock of Gibraltar on every hole. It's an extremely tough course - elevated tees, narrow fairways, blind holes and greens surrounded by water mean you have to bring your A game. Halfway house on 10th was idyllic - makes you seriously consider not playing the back 9. But that would be a waste. Can't wait to go back."
