Lester Brunt Wealth Management explains why winter doesn't mean you have to give up on your golf or financial planning.

Just like it’s easy to put off cleaning out your wardrobe or reviewing your finances, when it’s cold and damp outside, it can be all too tempting to stay inside and postpone playing that round of golf. With a little thinking ahead, there is no reason why we must put our golf game on hold over the winter months – instead, we can use this time to put in some practice and prepare for the upcoming season.

How to prepare for that perfect winter’s day round

Layer up –

When it’s chilly and damp outside you may be tempted to put on that thick winter coat. Don’t be fooled! Your best option will be to wear thin layers that you can take off and put on as you go around the course.

Stay warm –

Now that your layers are sorted, think about your extremities. Don’t forget to bring a hat and add a hand warmer to your kit bag; it’s a game changer. It’s important to keep your hands warm - gloves are great, but don’t overlook a pair of mittens - they warm your hand much faster!

Club up, Tee it forward –

No matter how hard you try, your ball won’t go as far in wintery conditions, so don’t be afraid to club up and while you do that, tee up too. Don’t be hard on yourself, move to the forward tee to make the course shorter – it’s a great way of keeping the round fun!

Mix it up –

Use the conditions as a chance to get creative! Mix it up and take the shots that you usually wouldn’t; winter is a great season to practise and improve your skills.

Don’t worry about your score –

Winter rounds deserve to be fun, so take off the pressure of winning and enjoy spending this time walking the course with friends.

What does this mean in relation to your finances?

Layer up –

Review your income and expenditure; layer up essential bills so you know what you have left over to enjoy spending on your family and friends.

Stay warm –

Look at your assets and decide which of these are your ‘stay warm fund’ - your emergency fund. Shop around for the best savings account to keep your money safe, secure and protected.

Club up, Tee it forward –

With the impact of inflation starting to impact all of us, it’s a really good time of year to review your position and ‘tee it forward’. Working with an adviser to ‘cash flow model’ your assets will let you know whether you need to make the course shorter or if you’re good to continue playing the long course.

Mix it up –

Just like on the course, get creative with your finances; talk with your adviser about new ideas to help you reach your goals and improve your position.

Don’t worry about your score –

Allow the advisers to help you. You’ll find that professional advice will help you reduce your stress so you’re free to enjoy the winter. Spend less time worrying and more time enjoying your golf.
