We always knew the Grand Final to the Rose Ladies Series would be unforgettable, but we never expected it to end quite like this.

After a wild fire stopped play at Round 3 of the Race to the West at Wentworth yesterday, organisers have now decided to conclude the tournament with the scores from Round 2 at The Berkshire.

This means that Alice Hewson is the winner of the Rose Ladies Series and Charley Hull is the winner of the American Golf Order of Merit.

They will both return to Wentworth today (Saturday August 8) to be presented with their awards by Kate Rose.

Event organisers Excel Sports Management worked through the night along with Kate and Justin Rose to try and find a suitable alternative date for the resumption of the event.

But, with both the Ladies European Tour and LPGA resuming this month with packed schedules, they decided that their best option was to make the Grand Final 36-holes instead of 54.

In a statement released this morning Justin Rose said:

“Our mission was to serve the ladies and provide an opportunity for them to play and sharpen up for their respective seasons. So the last thing we want to do now is create a burden for them having to fit in the final round at a later date. A natural act of god forced us to this point and Kate and I wish the ladies all the best as they prepare for their upcoming events.”

The blaze is said to have started on Chobham Common before spreading over the railway lines and near to the 10th tee at Wentworth.

At around 5pm all players, caddies and staff were evacuated safely and play was paused.

It was hoped that the tournament would restart today but due to an ongoing fire risk and advice from Surrey emergency services, it was decided that Wentworth West Course must remain closed. Nearby homes have also been evacuated.

Our thoughts are with everyone in the Wentworth area and who has been affected by this dangerous tragedy.

However, we won't let this ending take away from how incredible this Series has been from the moment it started.

We also want to extend a huge congratulations to both Alice and Charley and thank everyone who helped make this tournament happen and also kept all the players, caddies and staff safe.
