Former professional Sara Spencer won the Welsh Women's Open Seniors title, completing a Triple Crown of UK championships spanning more than 36 years.

Sara Spencer won the English and Scottish amateur stroke play titles in the eighties, but was beaten in a play-off for the Welsh Open Championship in 1987 before turning professional, then taking a break from the game for family reasons, getting her amateur status back and now competing at Seniors level.

Two consistent rounds at North Wales Golf Club meant a four shot win for the Heswall player, from Mill Ride’s Jane Sly in second, with Broadway’s Linda Carruthers in third and also winning the Welsh Women’s Senior Championship.

“I am really pleased to finish the season with a win,” said 55-year-old Spencer. “I played consistently over the last two days and that was the key with some rain and it was very windy.

“I had never played the course before this week, but I enjoyed it and the greens were really good.”

Spencer enjoyed a successful amateur career including representing England at international level, and turned professional before putting everything on hold following the birth of her terminally ill daughter.

“I played amateur golf years and years ago, played for England in the Home Internationals, was reserve for the Curtis Cup, then turned professional for four years with a best result of fourth in the Slovenian Open (in 1992),” she explained.

“Then I had our first child who was born terminally ill, so I stopped playing golf because my life was turned around. When life deals you that card then things you thought were important, suddenly aren’t.

“Charlotte needed 24 hour care, so our lives changed and she lived until she was six. We also had three more children, so it was only when the youngest reached school age that I regained my amateur status in 2008 to play socially.

“Then I reached seniors golf and I have really enjoyed playing in that. I am very lucky to have spent all that time with the family and now being able to come back and play.”

Wales Golf Competitions Manager Christian Askins added:

“Congratulations to Sara on her four shot victory, the reward for steady golf in some testing conditions.

“Thanks to the staff and volunteers at North Wales Golf Club who did so much to ensure the success of the event, with plenty of positive comments from the players.

“Congratulations also to Linda Carruthers for winning the Welsh Women’s Seniors Championship.”
