It’s so frustrating when you feel you’ve done the hard work and then you mess up a hole with what we all describe as those silly shots. It doesn't have to be that way!

It’s so frustrating when you feel you’ve done the hard work and then you mess up a hole with what we all describe as those silly shots. These are caused for a variety of reasons, but with the right technique you should have a happier round!

The Criminal Putt

Missing a short putt is like missing your mouth with a fork! These putts are almost always missed due to nerves or lack of concentration; therefore set a routine for the short putts as well as the long putts. When you miss a short putt, give yourself 15 seconds to regroup and take a few deep breaths.

To calm your nerves before making your putting stroke, lift the putter a few millimetres above the ground. By hovering the putter and then swinging, this will take all the tension out of your hands. It might feel a bit scary to begin with, but please trust me as it works!

Tip: Normally short putts (under a foot) are straight so you should not be aiming outside of the hole.

No More Cigar Moments

When you’re in a greenside bunker it is likely that you will have a highish lip to get over. Therefore, you must develop a technique guaranteed to get the ball out first time.

Golfers often try to lift the ball out of the bunker rather than using the loft of the club and hitting down into the sand. Weight transfer is important, so an easy way to become confident is to ensure your weight is even at set-up and when you follow through, transfer your weight to the foot closest to the target.
