Many golfers spend hours on the range honing their golf swings believing that striking the ball better will improve their scores. The truth is that, yes, better ball striking will help, however, good course management will save you hours of unnecessary practice.

First you should go through a checklist before you hit the ball. This will become easier and quicker over time and is well worth doing, as eventually it will become a habit.

When you approach the tee think about where you want your ball to land on the fairway. Is there water on the left or out of bounds on the right? This will determine which side of the teeing ground you tee up. If you want to promote a certain shape of ball flight, by teeing up on the left you will promote a draw and on the right, a fade.

If you don’t do so already, set yourself a good pre-shot routine. Stand behind the ball and pick a target in the distance. Any swing thoughts should only be thought during your practice swing.

Take a practice swing, visualising the shot you are about to play, then once you step into the shot, all thoughts should be on your target. You can picture an imaginary line (as shown with the golf club) and once you step over the line you are in play mode and should be totally focused on the shot in hand.

Once you leave the tee you can then start thinking about where the wind is coming from, approximately how far the distance is and the lie of the ball - all things you can see and feel while walking. Remember to take into account whether the green is above or below your feet as this means that you’ll generally need to take one more or one less club.
