Mimi Rhodes and Nastasia Nadaud have been handed their first foursomes assignment after their brilliant debut victory, while Charley Hull and Lottie Woad get another chance as Europe and the USA resume battle at Bernardus.

After a first day in which neither Europe nor the USA could establish an advantage, Saturday morning will begin with four intriguing foursomes matches – and some revealing decisions from both captains.

World number one Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz will once again lead the USA out at 6.40am BST, but this time they face Maja Stark and Linn Grant. Both partnerships won convincingly on Friday morning, setting up a fascinating opening contest between two combinations that already look central to their respective teams.

For Nordqvist, putting the Swedes straight into the opening match gives Europe an opportunity to challenge one of Stanford’s strongest combinations immediately.

Maguire and Henseleit reunited

Leona Maguire and Esther Henseleit also earned another opportunity after their Friday foursomes victory. They face Jennifer Kupcho and Rose Zhang at 6.52am, with the Americans given an immediate chance to respond after their defeat to Stark and Grant on Day One.

Maguire and Henseleit had to work considerably harder for their opening point, taking Andrea Lee and Lindy Duncan all the way to the 18th before completing a 2UP victory. It proved a crucial result for Europe, completing the recovery from their difficult start and sending the teams into the afternoon level.

Their return on Saturday is therefore no surprise. What is more interesting is Stanford’s decision to keep faith with Kupcho and Zhang against a different European pairing.

Nordqvist backs her fearless rookies

Perhaps the most intriguing European selection comes in the third match, where Mimi Rhodes and Nastasia Nadaud will face Andrea Lee and Auston Kim at 7.04am.

Rhodes and Nadaud were one of the stories of Friday afternoon after Nordqvist paired the two rookies together in fourballs. They rewarded that faith with a 2&1 victory over Corpuz and Kim, looking increasingly comfortable as the match progressed and displaying exactly the chemistry their captain believed they possessed.

Saturday represents a different test.. Foursomes demands a different rhythm and partnership dynamic from fourballs, but Nordqvist has clearly seen enough to believe the combination can work in alternate shot too.

Another chance for Hull and Woad

Hull and Woad complete the European line-up at 7.16am against Alison Lee and Lauren Coughlin, giving the English pair an opportunity to improve on Friday’s foursomes defeat.

Nordqvist strongly defended the partnership after Day One, pointing out how difficult it had been for them to establish a rhythm against Korda and Corpuz. Woad had apparently told her captain that at one stage she had hit only two or three shots in around two hours, an illustration of just how awkward alternate-shot golf can become when a match begins to run away from a pairing.

Their opponents have already enjoyed success of their own. Alison Lee and Coughlin combined to beat Céline Boutier and Nanna Koerstz Madsen 3&2 on Friday morning, meaning three of Saturday’s four American combinations have already played foursomes together at Bernardus.
