Blackpool and St Annes have been given an AIG Women’s Open makeover as the countdown begins to the Championship’s 50th anniversary at Royal Lytham & St Annes.
Blackpool Tower was lit in AIG Women’s Open blue and white this week, marking one month to go until the Championship’s landmark 50th anniversary edition at Royal Lytham & St Annes.
The illumination ran over two evenings as part of a wider takeover of the Fylde Coast ahead of the tournament, which is played from 29 July to 2 August. One of St Annes’ beach huts has also been turned into an AIG Women’s Open “Champions Hut” for the month of July, giving families and beachgoers on the seafront a Championship-themed stop.

A landmark year
This year’s Championship marks 50 years since the AIG Women’s Open was first played, in 1976. Now run by The R&A, it remains one of five major championships in women’s golf. This year 144 players will compete at Royal Lytham & St Annes for the trophy, with the low amateur across all 72 holes awarded the Smyth Salver.
Zoe Ridgway, Championship Director of the AIG Women’s Open, said the activations were designed to “bring the AIG Women’s Open into the heart of Blackpool and St Annes, creating a moment that local people, visitors and golf fans could see, share and be part of.” She added that the Championship is about showcasing the best players in the game, and about inspiring more women and girls to see golf as a sport for them.
Looking ahead
After Royal Lytham & St Annes, the AIG Women’s Open moves to Royal St George’s in 2027 and Sunningdale in 2028.
