Newly dated 15th-century hall still welcomes golfers — and offers a unique retreat for group getaways
Woodsome Hall Golf Club, just south of Huddersfield, may now lay claim to a global golfing first: the oldest original building still used as a golf clubhouse.
Recent research using dendrochronology — the science of dating wood through tree rings — has confirmed that the timber used in the roof of Woodsome’s Great Hall dates back to 1462. That makes the building nearly 60 years older than previously thought and places it firmly in the late medieval Tudor era.
A Hall Steeped in History
The timber dating, carried out by The Nottingham Tree Dating Laboratory, analyzed 10 samples from the roof structure. The oldest ring dated to 1365, and the youngest to 1462 — suggesting the wood was cut at the same time for construction.
The findings prompted a reassessment of the building’s age. Previously believed to be from the 16th century, the Great Hall is now confirmed to have late-15th-century origins.
“If Laurence Kaye, who oversaw much of the construction at Woodsome, could return today, he would still recognize his hall,” said club member Phil Sands, who led the research. “There’s a strong case that this is the oldest original building used as a golf clubhouse anywhere in the world.”
More Than a Round of Golf
Today, Woodsome offers more than just a historic clubhouse. Visitors are welcomed with striking architecture and the distinct sense of stepping back in time — all while enjoying modern comforts on and off the course.

The club’s General Manager, Ryan O’Connor, says the experience is unlike any other. “From the moment you arrive, the surroundings make a big impression. The history here adds something really special to a round of golf.”
A Unique Golf Getaway for Women’s Groups
For women looking to plan a group golfing break, Woodsome is an ideal destination. Set within the grounds is the Cottage on the Course — a comfortable retreat with eight twin en-suite rooms that can host up to 16 guests. It’s well-suited for friends planning a weekend away, a team-building break, or a celebratory trip with plenty of golf.
