Tom Doak-designed layout opens for preview play in the Scottish Highlands
Cabot Highlands has released the first photographs of Old Petty, the newest addition to its golf offering in the Scottish Highlands. Designed by renowned architect Tom Doak, the course will open for limited preview play from 1 August to 30 September 2025.
Set on dramatic coastal terrain near Inverness, Old Petty is located beside the centuries-old Old Petty Church and offers sweeping views of the Moray Firth and Castle Stuart—visible from 13 of its 18 holes. The course has been designed to fit organically into the natural contours of the land, with routing that emphasizes variety, character, and strategic play.
A Highlands Layout with Heritage and Drama
Old Petty’s design includes several standout features, such as a short par-3 17th and a series of holes that weave toward and away from the coastline. The opening and closing holes intersect near the clubhouse, creating a dynamic start and finish. The 10th hole provides some of the most dramatic views of the coastline, while the 14th brings players back toward the sea.
Doak, working with associate Clyde Johnson, has emphasized a minimalist approach, letting the landscape guide the layout rather than reshaping it to fit convention.
Preview Play and Booking Details
Preview tee times will be available only to those also booking a round at Cabot Highlands’ Castle Stuart course, priced at £330. Preview play at Old Petty will cost £190. During this period, Old Petty will be offered as a walking-only experience.
“From the outset, our vision has been to honour the land and its rich history while crafting an unforgettable golf experience,” said Cabot CEO and co-founder Ben Cowan-Dewar. “Old Petty is a course that will surprise, challenge, and inspire—true to the spirit of the Highlands.”
Cabot Highlands reopened for the 2025 season on March 31. Tee times for both Castle Stuart and Old Petty are available via www.cabothighlands.com.
