We rate all the players from team Europe at Team USA at the 2023 Solheim Cup
The 2023 Solheim Cup has now come to an end with Europe retaining the trophy, a third win on the last three occasions. It was a year when the teams were so evenly matched, with the majority of the matches going to the final few holes.
We thought we would take a look at each of the players from both teams and rate their performances. Here's what we thought:
Team Europe - Player Profiles
Celine Boutier rating C-
Age: 29
Country: France
Solheim Cup appearances: 3
Previous Solheim Cups: 2019, 2021
2023 Solheim Cup record: 0-3-0
Although we feel that Boutier was let down by being paired with Hall (who wasn't on the best form), the Major winner just wasn't able to bring her A game to her singles match on Sunday. Three losses this week was totally unexpected.
Carlota Ciganda rating A**
Age: 33
Country: Spain
Solheim Cup appearances: 6
Previous Solheim Cups: 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021
2023 Solheim Cup record: 4-0-0
The MVP of Team Europe who managed the weight of the Spanish world on her shoulders. Winning all four of her matches and holing the winning putt for Europe to retain the trophy. It really doesn't get any better than this!
Gemma Dryburgh rating B
Age: 30
Country: Scotland
Solheim Cup appearances: 1
Previous Solheim Cups: n/a
2023 Solheim Cup record: 0-2-0
We are giving the Scot a solid B for her Solheim Cup debut. Although there was no win, she played some great golf. Including her chip in on 16. We also feel she should have played more than two matches. Looking forward to seeing her tee it up in 2024.
Linn Grant rating A-
Age: 24
Country: Sweden
Turned Pro: 2021
Solheim Cup appearances: 1
Previous Solheim Cups: n/a
2023 Solheim Cup record: 3-2-0
An impressive debut from the Swede, although expectations were probably higher than what she achieved. After a nervy start she proved her worth, playing all five sessions and took her singles match to the final hole. A fantastic addition to the European side.
Georgia Hall rating C-
Age: 27
Country: England
Solheim Cup appearances: 4
Previous Solheim Cups: 2017, 2019, 2021
2023 Solheim Cup record: 1-3-0
Hall did not bring her A game this week. There may be one victory and three halves but we feel that her overall performance was disappointing. Sorry Georgia we expected more.
Caroline Hedwall rating A-
Age: 34
Country: Sweden
Solheim Cup appearances: 5
Previous Solheim Cups: 2011, 2013, 2015, 2019
2023 Solheim Cup record: 1-1-0
Hedwall delivered when she had to and that is exactly what her Captain wanted her to do. Nothing more and nothing less. A close loss and winning her singles at a vital moment showed us why she was a valid Captain's pick. Never doubt Pettersen's thinking!
Charley Hull rating C-
Age: 27
Country: England
Solheim Cup appearances: 6
Previous Solheim Cups: 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021
2023 Solheim Cup record: 1-2-0
Expectations were high for Hull coming into this year's Solheim Cup but she seemed out of sorts from day one. Only playing three matches, she redeemed herself slightly in her fourball victory with Maguire but overall it was a disappointing display from the Solheim veteran.
Leona Maguire rating A-
Age: 28
Country: Ireland
Solheim Cup appearances: 2
Previous Solheim Cups: 2021
2023 Solheim Cup record: 3-2-0
Maguire may have had two losses this week but they were both close matches. Overall her performance was strong and she had a dominant fourball and singles performance on Saturday and Sunday winning both 4&3.
Anna Nordqvist rating B-
Age: 36
Country: Sweden
Solheim Cup appearances: 8
Previous Solheim Cups: 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021
2023 Solheim Cup record: 1-3-0
It was a big week for Norqvist with dual responsibilities. The scoring record which included three losses, doesn't really reflect the way that she played. A fierce competitor but maybe the pairing with Maguire needs to be reconsidered in 2024. Great to see her get a win in the singles.
Emily Kristine Pedersen rating B+
Age: 27
Country: Denmark
Solheim Cup appearances: 3
Previous Solheim Cups: 2017, 2021
2023 Solheim Cup record: 2-2-1
Pedersen had a tough ask this week when she was sent out for every match. Something that we did not expect. After a faltering start with Hull, she came back strong but a slightly lack lustre final day brought her ranking down (she was probably shattered to be fair).
Madelene Sagstrom rating B
Age: 30
Country: Sweden
Solheim Cup appearances: 3
Previous Solheim Cups: 2017, 2021
2023 Solheim Cup record: 1-1-1
Sagstrom worked well with Dryburgh to earn a half and paired well with Pedersen for a win. However, she was dominated by Vu in the singles and just failed to make much of an impact. Still a vital member of Team Europe though.
Maja Stark rating B
Age: 23
Country: Sweden
Solheim Cup appearances: 1
Previous Solheim Cups: n/a
2023 Solheim Cup record: 2-1-1
Stark, like Grant, had a shaky start. Played in one of the most exciting matches with Pedersen on Friday afternoon and also got a win with Grant on Saturday morning. Although she won her singles match, it wasn't her best performance with birdies failing to drop.
Team USA - Player Profiles
Allisen Corpuz rating B+
Age: 25
Country: Hawaii, USA
Solheim Cup appearances: 1
Previous Solheim Cups: n/a
2023 Solheim Cup record: 2-2-0
We loved the pairing of Corpuz and Korda which we think worked really well - two wins was proof of that - also one of the biggest winning margins 5&3. Unfortunately, the singles match failed to have a lot of spark, which brought down her ranking.
Ally Ewing rating C
Age: 30
Country: Mississippi, USA
Solheim Cup appearances: 3
Previous Solheim Cups: 2019, 2021
2023 Solheim Cup record: 1-3-0
The Ewing we loved in 2021 just wasn't here this week. She may have been part of the pairing with Knight that beat Hull and Pedersen 5&4 but it felt like the Europeans lost the match rather than the Americans winning it.
Danielle Kang rating A-
Age: 30
Country: San Francisco, USA
Solheim Cup appearances: 4
Previous Solheim Cups: 2017, 2019, 2021
2023 Solheim Cup record: 2-2-0
Kang was always going to be a formidable opponent who thrives on the noise from the crowd. None more so when she got the crowd to cheer with the music blaring. Two close losses but overall a solid performance from the American.
Megan Khang rating A+
Age: 30
Country: Massachusetts, USA
Solheim Cup appearances: 3
Previous Solheim Cups: 2019, 2021
2023 Solheim Cup record: 3-0-1
Megan Khang brought all the fun to the first tee and really interacted with the crowd. This extended to her play on the course where she went undefeated. We're going to nickname her the smiling assassin and Team USA's MVP.
Cheyenne Knight rating A-
Age: 25
Country: Texas, USA
Solheim Cup appearances: 1
Previous Solheim Cups: n/a
2023 Solheim Cup record: 2-1-0
Knight had an impressive debut performance at Finca Cortesin. We were particularly impressed with her fight back in the singles match against Dryburgh. A silent assassin maybe as she didn't always show a lot of emotion.
Nelly Korda rating A-
Age: 25
Country: Florida, USA
Solheim Cup appearances: 3
Previous Solheim Cups: 2019, 2021
2023 Solheim Cup record: 2-2-0
There were questions over Korda's putting coming into this week but overall there was definitely an improvement. She remained steady, calm and consistent and we loved her pairing with rookie Corpuz. She maybe a little disappointed to lose to Ciganda but certainly put up a good fight.
Jennifer Kupcho rating C-
Age: 26
Country: Colorado, USA
Solheim Cup appearances: 2
Previous Solheim Cups: 2021
2023 Solheim Cup record: 0-2-1
Kupcho lit up the Solheim Cup in 2021, being the rival to Maguire two years ago. The player that we saw then did not seem to materialise this week and the fact she only played three matches may be a reflection on her current form. We hope to see her back to her best at Robert Trent Jones in 2024.
Andrea Lee rating B+
Age: 25
Country: California, USA
Solheim Cup appearances: 1
Previous Solheim Cups: n/a
2023 Solheim Cup record: 1-2-1
Lee may look at her scoring record and feel that she could have done better but her looses were close and she fought back brilliantly against Hall to gain a half point at a vital moment during the singles matches.
Lexi Thompson rating A
Age: 28
Country: Florida, USA
Solheim Cup appearances: 6
Previous Solheim Cups: 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021
2023 Solheim Cup record: 3-1-0
There were so many people who questioned her place on the team and it was fantastic to see Lexi prove all the doubters wrong. A Solheim Cup legend who like Khang was invaluable for Team USA.
Lilia Vu rating B+
Age: 25
Country: California, USA
Solheim Cup appearances: 1
Previous Solheim Cups: n/a
2023 Solheim Cup record: 1-3-0
Vu didn't necessarily make the impact that she had hoped for at her first Solheim Cup but she showed why she is a two time Major winner with a dominating defeat of Sagstrom in the singles which happened at a crucial moment in the afternoon. Lots to build on for 2024.
Angel Yin rating B+
Age: 24
Country: California, USA
Solheim Cup appearances: 3
Previous Solheim Cups: 2017, 2019
2023 Solheim Cup record: 2-1-0
In our opinion, Yin didn't showcase her full potential but we were really impressed with how she held her nerve to take get a vital point for USA in her singles match which had the potential to be a momentum changer.
Rose Zhang rating C
Age: 20
Country: California, USA
Solheim Cup appearances: 1
Previous Solheim Cups: n/a
2023 Solheim Cup record: 0-2-1
There were high expectations for Zhang who was making her rookie debut. Maybe three matches wasn't enough to show what she was made of but she did not rise to the occasion like many thought she would.
We look forward to the Solheim Cup heading to Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in September 2024.
