A strong start to the season for Lorna McClymont as she wins the Welsh Women's Open Stroke Play Championship

It was a Scottish one-two at the Welsh Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship in Prestatyn, with Lorna McClymont continuing her rich vein of form in lifting the trophy.

She claimed the Welsh title with an impressive score of 14-under-par to add to recent wins in both the British Universities and The R&A Student Series finals, as well as a runner-up finish in the Helen Holm Scottish Women’s Open Championship.

Jennifer Saxton was second, two strokes behind, while Celtic Manor’s Bethan Morris was the top Welsh player in sixth place, with international colleague Kath O’Connor, West Byfleet, tied seventh.

Luca Thompson, Pavenham Park, was tied thirteenth and there was also a creditable performance for Wales’s Isobel Kelly in tied twentieth, alongside Mold’s Annabel Collis, after last week’s third place in The R&A Under 16 Amateur Championship.

Stirling University student McClymont was delighted to win the Welsh title and impressed with the Prestatyn set-up.

“It was a great day for me, the weather was nice, I stayed calm and was able to keep the ball in play,” said the 22-year-old.

“Shooting fourteen under is a good confidence booster, knowing I can do that. The course was great, in good condition, and winning such a big title means a lot to me.”

Wales Golf Championship Manager Christian Askins added:

“Congratulations to Lorna for leading the way in an event where there was plenty of impressive scoring.

“She moved into contention with a 68 in the second round and then a best-of-the-day 67 in the final round. From a Welsh point of view it was also good to see Bethan Morris score a 67 in the second round, equalling the lowest score of the week.

“Prestatyn proved to be an excellent venue for the championship, the course was in excellent condition and provided a fair test for the players.

“Thanks also to all the club members, staff and volunteers who helped the event run so smoothly.”
