England’s Amelia Wan delivered a standout performance at Ashburnham Golf Club to win the Welsh Women’s Open Strokeplay Championship by a commanding seven-shot margin.
The 18-year-old from Coxmoor Golf Club in Nottinghamshire led from start to finish, carding rounds of 71, 72, and 71 to finish 11 under par. Her consistency over three rounds proved too much for the rest of the field, securing the biggest victory of her young career.
“I knew not to overcomplicate anything and just keep it in play,” said Wan. “It’s a tight course, but I really enjoyed the event. I’ve worked hard over the winter, so I’m proud of how I handled myself and hope this win gives me the confidence to keep going.”
Wan, who was part of England’s winning team at the European Girls’ Team Championships last year, recently moved up to the women’s squad. She has one more competition before sitting her A-Levels and heading to Baylor University in Texas later this year.
Welsh Golfers Impress on Home Soil
While Wan dominated the leaderboard, several Welsh players delivered encouraging performances. Luca Thompson (Pavenham Park) finished second, ahead of Scottish contenders Rosie Maguire and Hannah Ounap. Alicia Kelly (Wernddu) took fifth, Morgan Bollan (Crewe) tied for sixth, and Rebecca del Sol-Gonzalez (Pennard) shared ninth.
“Congratulations to Amelia on such a consistent showing,” said Wales Golf Competitions Manager Dan Fullager. “It was also great to see strong performances from several Welsh players, who represented their clubs and country proudly.”
Ashburnham’s challenging layout tested some of the top amateur women golfers from across the UK and Europe. Fullager also credited the club’s staff and volunteers for their role in hosting the successful event.
