Historic Kent course to welcome the world’s top women golfers
For the first time in its history, Royal St George’s will host the AIG Women’s Open in 2027. The championship is scheduled to take place from 28 July to 1 August, bringing one of women’s golf’s most prestigious events to the storied Kent links.
A Historic Venue with a New Chapter
Known for hosting The Open 15 times—most recently in 2021, when Collin Morikawa lifted the Claret Jug—Royal St George’s is among the most iconic courses in the UK. The 2027 AIG Women’s Open will mark a significant moment as the course welcomes the world’s best female golfers for the first time.
The venue has crowned champions like Darren Clarke, Greg Norman, and Sandy Lyle over the years. In two years’ time, it will offer a new challenge to the women’s game, with players competing for one of the most coveted titles in golf.
Leadership Voices on the Announcement
Mark Darbon, Chief Executive of The R&A, said the move underlines a commitment to staging the championship at world-class venues.
“Royal St George’s is one of the world’s great links courses and will provide a fantastic test for the players,” Darbon noted. “We look forward to working with AIG to put on a wonderful championship for the fans on the south coast of England.”
Peter Zaffino, Chairman and CEO of AIG, echoed the sentiment.
“Bringing the AIG Women’s Open to Royal St George’s reflects The R&A and AIG’s continued shared commitment to elevate women’s golf by holding the Championship at the world’s most iconic venues,” he said.
Zaffino added that the course’s historic status will offer a fitting stage to highlight the skills of today’s top players and inspire future generations of fans.
Looking Ahead
Founded in 1887, Royal St George’s has hosted some of golf’s most storied events, including the Curtis Cup, Walker Cup, and the Women’s Amateur Championship. Its inclusion in the AIG Women’s Open rota is seen as another step in enhancing the profile of women’s golf.
Before the championship heads to Kent, the 2026 edition will take place at Royal Lytham & St Annes from 29 July to 2 August.
