Welcome to the beta version of the new Women & Golf website. Our web monkeys are still hard at work and welcome your feedback.
The West Sussex Golf Club, popularly known as Pulborough, was officially opened in 1931, having been designed by two outstanding golf architects, Guy Campbell, who also designed Princes’ and Killarney and Cecil Hutchison, designer of Gleneagles and Turnberry. (Very recently, Stafford Hotchkin has been attributed to West Sussex too). At Pulborough, these architects are acknowledged to have created one of the most natural and aesthetically pleasing courses in England.
This course, commonly known as 'Pulborough', is great for women in my opinion. If you can hit a decent tee shot to get over the first carry of heather, then the rest of the trouble is avoidable if you make good decisions, and the hazards are rarely unfair. The greens are big and so are the bunkers, however you can mostly play around them if you don’t have the high shot required to go over. There is also a shorter blue-tee option which I am told is popular with many of the women.
It’s very pretty – I’m told that the heather flowers into a gorgeous purple carpet in August and some holes offer lovely views across the course and the Sussex countryside.
They have severe trouble with the greens at the moment but I haven't marked them down because they are dealing with it and hopefully they will get better.
Note that it’s a two-ball course only, they try to make sure everyone is round in under 4 hours. Take enough balls because the heather really does just swallow them up never to be seen again!
You don’t come back to the clubhouse, but there is a loo at 9, but remember to get the code from the pro-shop before you go out (I was impressed that the number was probably chosen by a mathematician! Most places just choose the year the club was founded!)
