Welcome to the beta version of the new Women & Golf website. Our web monkeys are still hard at work and welcome your feedback.
The course is situated in a natural valley within Kirkby Forest that utilises the naturally undulating terrain to the full. Some fairways sweep through wooded hillsides and others run through heather, fern and gorse clad valleys. Hollinwell was formed in 1887 and moved to Hollinwell in 1901, when the twice Open Champion, Willie Park Junior, was invited to lay out a new 18 hole course. The Willie Park routing makes this one of the greatest inland courses.
I thoroughly enjoyed playing this course. Looking at the course from the clubhouse you feel like you are sitting in a giant bowl, with walls of bracken-lined slopes topped with towering pines. It’s quite stunning. It’s not for everyone - there is plenty of danger to catch you out, and many long carries over deep rough and bracken, but if you can get over this and keep the ball straight, the challenge is very enjoyable. The fairways are tight and shaped, the bunkers were annoyingly often placed to catch my drive, but are smaller than many similar courses and the greens are superb. Make your score on the front nine because you will be hanging on for dear life on the back nine as the elevations get higher and the challenges more dramatic. But as you climb higher you also get wonderful views of Nottinghamshire, and some sweeping, gorgeous holes.
While it doesn’t score highly for playability – the long par 3 13th looks almost unplayable for some women, I have given this course five stars because I enjoyed myself hugely.
The halfway hut is accessible twice on the course.
The women play off a completely separate card because Notts Ladies is a separate club, based on this course. I didn’t fully understand how that worked!
