Hayling Golf Club is one of the premier links golf course on the South Cost and the only true links course between Rye and Cornwall.
Tee choice is vital on this gorse-lined links. The fairways aren’t unfairly narrow, and there is a line of fairly benign rough before the gorse, but if you do hit the gorse, it’s probably a lost ball. It gives beautiful definition to the holes and with its springtime yellow flowers it’s really stunning, but it will earn no fans from those who are prone to spraying the ball off the tee.
For everyone else, this is a very enjoyable course to play with a variety of challenges, and some wonderful sea views, including from the red tees.
The conditioning of the course is excellent, with even the most forward blue tees mowed to crisp perfection. The bunkering is fair, perhaps even generous, and the rolling green complexes provide the main challenge. The fairways are rolling and sloping, but without the giant moguls that cause havoc on some links courses. The greens are often large and a joy to play. There are blind holes, but the course planner gives useful guidance on where to play to.
