Welcome to the beta version of the new Women & Golf website. Our web monkeys are still hard at work and welcome your feedback.
Situated alongside the A66 with easy access East & West, Appleby Golf Club can only be described as an 'Inland Links' course, The Open Champion, Willie Fernie used the contours of the land and the heather and bracken features to create our course to great effect. Sitting on a bedrock of Sandstone, Appleby is free draining so is playable all year round, which is a rare thing in Cumbria! The greens are renowned for offering the best throughout the year.
Our signature hole, the Bell Hole 15th, has Hilton Beck, out of bounds and a concealed green to contend with, but is worth the wait.
On a sunny day, the backdrop of the beautiful, purple Pennine hills is breathtaking here. It’s not a long course, and there is a good variety of tees, so it’s very playable with only a few exceptions. There are some dramatic holes that are such fun to play and will live in the memory long after you leave. The greens and chipping areas are protected by wire fences to stop the sheep, but this means they are in superb condition and the turf is a joy to play from. A lovely course. I played this in the Eden Valley mixed pairs tournament which I can also recommend.

If any ladies are searching for a quality golfing experience without breaking the bank, Appleby is a must!
Ranked just outside the Top 💯 in England, in another popular publication, the circular routing of the course makes you feel that you’re the only group on the expansive property. It also means no calls of Fore and duck and cover. With 4 sets of tees, ALL rated for women, between 5100 and 6000 yards, everyone can find a test to challenge and enjoy.
The turf is firm, the putting surfaces are as good and better than you will find anywhere, and the walking on the whole is pretty easy.
Fairway widths are mainly generous, the semi rough is very playable and if you do venture into the rough, it’s short, gnarly and heathery but you will find your ball. There are no fairway bunkers on the course and only a handful of tree, but strategic patches of gorse are to be avoided.
The greenside bunkers are riveted links style, testing but not too punishing.
It’s just a really good golf course!
