Breathing analysis, rucking mode, trail discovery and golf upgrades headline latest update
Garmin has rolled out a fresh batch of software updates to several of its popular smartwatches, introducing features that enhance fitness tracking, outdoor exploration, and security. Devices including the fēnix 8, Forerunner, Instinct 3, Lily 2 Active, and Venu 3 will now offer new tools designed to help users train smarter and explore further.
Smarter Health and Training Tools
Among the key updates is Breathing Variations, a feature that uses Pulse Ox technology to provide insights into changes in breathing patterns during sleep. It’s designed to offer users a deeper understanding of their overnight health metrics.
For those with more intense training regimes, a new Rucking Activity mode allows users to input backpack weight for improved tracking of load-bearing workouts like weighted hikes. Additionally, the Pack Weight feature can now be applied across activities such as running, trail running, and hiking—helping deliver more accurate VO2 max estimates when carrying extra gear.
More Secure and Versatile
Users can now enable a Passcode on their watch, helping protect sensitive data. For added safety, wrist detection can be activated so a PIN is required if the watch is removed.
Garmin has also introduced a Stage Timer aimed at competitive shooters. The feature delivers audible alerts about remaining time in a stage through paired hearing protection or the watch speaker.
Premium Trail and Golf Add-ons
Alongside free updates, Garmin has added optional premium services. Garmin Trails—available via Garmin Connect or Garmin Explore—helps users find and customise hiking, running, or backpacking routes with rich filters like terrain, dog-friendliness, and scenic features. Trail details include elevation, estimated time, and user reviews, and can be sent directly to compatible watches. The service is part of the Garmin Connect+ and Outdoor Maps+ plans, with a free 30-day trial.
Garmin Golf Membership is also expanding, with Venu 3 users now able to access premium golf tools such as full-colour CourseView maps, PlaysLike distances, and Green Contours. Subscriptions are available monthly (£8.99) or annually (£89.99), with a free 30-day trial.
The software update is rolling out now. Users can activate automatic updates via Garmin Connect or Garmin Express.
