The 2023 Solheim Cup took place in September at Finca Cortesin in Spain. The stunning course provided a fitting venue for the players, being rated as one of the finest in Europe. Set high above the spectacular Costa del Sol coastline, Finca winds its way through a beautiful natural landscape of Mediterranean oaks. Its impeccably manicured Bermuda grass fairways are punctuated with over 100 bunkers, but the course’s clever design means it provides an enjoyable challenge to low and high handicap golfers alike.
This year Team Europe were looking to make it a three-peat after winning the last two Solheim Cups at Inverness Club and Gleneagles. After a first morning that saw Team USA go 4-0, that seemed a long way off but Europe fought back to make it one of the most evenly contested matches on record.
At the start of the Sunday singles, the score was tied at 8-8. Europe needed 14 points to retain the trophy and USA 14.5 to win it back. In the end it would fall to home favourite Carlota Ciganda, who showed some real magic on the tee at the par 3 17th. A sublime shot to two feet which was nearly impossible to beat. Korda could not convert her birdie putt and had to settle for a par. As the match was so close, Korda did not concede the putt, so Ciganda had her fairy tale moment - holing out to win the match and retain the trophy for Team Europe.
A tied score (14-14) seemed fair after the teams were so close but although Team Europe were the ones celebrating it wasn't quite the three-peat victory that many fans would have hoped for.
We don't have long to wait to see the rematch as the teams take to Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in September 2024, where Team USA will be looking for revenge!
