Audrey O’Hagan and Carmel Quinn held off 31 rival pairs at County Longford to bring Fintona Golf Club its first national foursomes title in the competition’s near 60-year history.
Audrey O’Hagan and Carmel Quinn have won the Australian Spoons All-Ireland Final, giving Fintona Golf Club its first ever title in the event.
The Tyrone pair beat a field of 32 pairings from across Ireland at County Longford Golf Club, which hosted the final for the fourth year running under a shotgun start.
O’Hagan and Quinn started from the ninth tee and reached the turn with 15 points from their opening eight holes. Their round turned decisively at their ninth hole, the 17th, where a net eagle lifted them to 19 points. Three net birdies over the closing stretch, followed by a net par on the last, saw them home with a winning total of 38 points, two clear of Cork’s Ann Daly and Claire Coughlan.
“We’re absolutely delighted,” said Quinn. “Just over the moon that we’re bringing the Australian Spoons back to Fintona. As a team we played well throughout the 18 holes.”
O’Hagan credited a practice round played weeks earlier for their course knowledge on the day.
Daly and Coughlan didn’t leave empty-handed. Their three-over 76 secured the Gross Prize, edging Newlands duo Esme Murphy and Leonie Colgan by a shot.
The Australian Spoons is a foursomes stableford event, contested first at club level before pairs progress to regional and then national finals.
