Lincoln golfer Ellise Rymer capped a stellar week with victory over Isabella Kent in a final that went the distance at Moor Park.
Ellise Rymer has been crowned English Women’s Amateur Champion, beating Isabella Kent in a tense final at Moor Park Golf Club that was never more than a hole apart.
The win capped a remarkable week for the Lincoln golfer, who also qualified for AIG Women’s Open Final Qualifying before going on to win the national title, joining past champions Bronte Law and Trish Johnson on the roll of honour.
“It’s unbelievable. I feel like I’ve worked so hard on my golf over the last few years and today it all came together, so I’m super happy to win,” Rymer said. “This is definitely my biggest achievement to date – my last big win was the Scottish U16s in 2021, so a long time ago. It stands me in good stead heading into August and back into the college season in the USA.”
Final goes the distance
Rymer made an early birdie against Kent, of Castle Royle, before Kent holed an eagle putt from off the green on the par-5 13th to draw level. Rymer edged back ahead on the 15th, then survived a wayward tee shot on the 16th to force a half after Kent couldn’t get up and down.
Both parred the 17th before Rymer settled it in style, finding the green and holing the birdie putt on the 18th – the same finish that had won her semi-final earlier in the day.
She added that her quarter-final win over Jasmine Points had been “really tough,” leaving her tired heading into the semi-final against England Girls’ Squad member Mia Ingham. “She’s really good, so I was really happy to get through that,” Rymer said.
Route to the final
Kent reached the final with a 3&2 win over Summer Carash, pulling away after Carash had fought back from three down. Rymer’s semi-final against Ingham also went to the last, Rymer closing it out 2-up with a birdie – the same scoreline she repeated in the final.
Asked about celebrations, Rymer said: “I’m sure mum will find a place for the trophy – probably on the dining room table for a while. I’m going to celebrate this one by having a few beers.”
