New initiative shines a spotlight on women and girls with disabilities in sport
This October, The Golf Trust will launch a new project designed to better understand and support women with disabilities in recreational sport. The initiative begins with Her Power! Her Play, taking place on Monday, October 13 at Woburn Golf Club.
The event marks the start of a five-year programme aimed at exploring why women with disabilities are less likely to take part in activities such as golf. It follows The Golf Trust’s 13 years of experience introducing hundreds of thousands of people with disabilities to the game, during which they discovered that only 10% of participants have been women.
A day of golf and open conversations
Her Power! Her Play will include golf taster sessions, a shared lunch, and a panel discussion featuring women with disabilities. The panel will highlight both the barriers they face and the personal stories of how sport has shaped their lives.
Participants with mobility challenges will also have the chance to use a Paragolfer — an all-terrain, standing wheelchair designed to make golf accessible to more players.
Giving women and girls a platform
Charlotte Menai-Davies, Fundraising & Projects Officer at The Golf Trust, explained why this initiative is so important:
“For 13 years, we’ve seen golf transform lives. But we’ve also noticed something important: far more men than women engage with our programmes — in fact, 90% more. Rather than assume why, we want to listen, and that is why we’re hosting Her Power! Her Play. We want as many women and girls with disabilities from the local area to attend and to have their say.”
Free to attend
The event is free for women and girls with any disabilities. Whether you want to try golf for the first time, share your experiences, or simply enjoy a supportive and welcoming environment, the day is open to all.
