A review of our Women & Golf event on 19 June at The Caversham, home of Reading Golf Club
Women & Golf held a golf day at The Caversham, Home of Reading Golf Club, in the lovely Berkshire countryside this month. 44 players competed on a scorchingly beautiful sunny day in picturesque surroundings.
Golf at The Caversham

The players teed it up at the Eyston Course - a fantastic inland links championship course. Interestingly, the course has five coloured tees - Black, Gold, Blue, Green & Orange. This gives the players the opportunity to mix and match the tee boxes to adjust the length of the course for their round.
We like to keep things simple for our fun and informal golf days so we played off the orange tees (5,519 yards).
Located just outside Reading and built to USGA standards the course is in great condition year-round due to excellent drainage. The greens were in great condition but fast in places. The greenkeepers are doing a fantastic job and the course is now being recognised as one of the best in the South of England.
It plays long and there are long walks between some tees so many players took advantage of a buggy. Some of the greens are massive too.
With the amazing weather we had, I too wished I'd taken a buggy just to escape the unrelenting sun.
Some stats from the group:
- Average handicap was 20.2
- Average score was 32
First Tee Photocall
It was great to welcome back some familiar faces and say hello to players who were attending their first Women & Golf event.
It really was a geographically diverse playing field - teams from 20 clubs and 12 counties competed including Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Gloucestershire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Leicestershire, Middlesex, Oxfordshire, Surrey & Wiltshire.

Hats on (and off) to all the players who survived the excessive temperatives, Visors, hats, umbrellas, cooling scarves and 100+ spf sunscreen were definitely necessary. Plus litres of water.
After Golf in The View Room

After cooling down, the players enjoyed a beautifully presented late buffet lunch (with a selection of enticing 'home-made' desserts) in the View Room. The room overlooks the 18th green and first tee with a wrap around balcony.
A perfect place for us to chat about our rounds. Clearly, the temperatures out on the course were scorching and a major talking point.
Pop-Up Shop

We love a lit bit of retail therapy. Thanks to Jemma at Swing Out Sister for bringing the latest stylish golf clothing from their collection to showcase.
As well as some vibrant and summery outfits there was an array of accessories to mix and match outfits.
Prizegiving

The prizes were kindly provided by our fantastic sponsors Sun Mountain, New Balance, Abacus Sportswear, Ben Lomond Gin, Volvik and Daphne's Headcovers.
🏆 1st - Sun Mountain 2025 Matchplay 14-Way Cart Bag worth £350

🥉 3rd - Abacus Hybrid Vest/ Gilet worth £100
⛳ Nearest the Pin, Gets the Gin - Ben Lomond Special Edition The Open Gin

There were some great scores considering the heat, difficulty of the course and the lightning-fast greens.
Almost all of the field had not played there before and everyone said "they needed to come and play it again!".
Only 7 players out of 44 bettered their handicap.
The individual winners were as follows:
🏆 1st Annie Scollen from Enfield GC with 41 points wins a the Sun Mountain 2025 Matchplay 14-Way Cart Bag

🥈2nd Lisa Mignano from Enfield GC with 40pts wins a pair of New Balance golf shoes

🥉3rd Judy Steeden from Tandridge GC with 38pts (on count back) wins an Abacus Portrush Hybrid Vest. Unfortunately, Judy missed the photocall so a picture of her prize instead!

Also worth mentioning is that fact that 3rd prize was won on countback. So, commiserations to Helena from Royal Ascot who just missed out.
Other winners on the day were:

Goody Bags

An integral part of any golf day, each player took away a W&G shopping bag with some goodies.
Thanks to Wilson Golf for a sleeve of golf balls, St Andrews Bakery for the salted caramel protein snack golf balls, Eucerin for the suncreen, Surprizeshop for a mini goody bag with socks and Duca del Cosma for a 20% discount voucher on their golf shoes & boots. The sunscreen was extremely welcome because the sun was beating down throughout the round.
Thank you

Kim & Jane

Thoughts from the players
Just wanted to thank you both for a fabulous day, as ever at the Caversham. The course was amazing and one to be played again, in slightly less heat, maybe😂 The day was expertly organised and I was well on track for that amazing white golf bag, but had a usual loss of concentration mid way🤣…..next time.
Helen
Thank you both for a fantastic day out at The Caversham despite being overcome by the heat it really was a lovely day. I will have to go back and play the course at another time to do it justice. Many thanks for brilliant organization as usual.

Just a quick note to say thank you for a great day yesterday. I enjoyed playing the course, it was challenging but interesting and playable. The clubhouse service was efficient and friendly. The GM was very good 😉.
