One lucky Women & Golf reader will win a fabulous three-night golf break for two on the stunning island of Madeira, with up to five rounds of golf included.
The Madeira archipelago - just a three-and-a-half-hour flight from London - is home to three breathtaking golf courses. Two of the courses - Palheiro Golf and Santo do Serra - are on Madeira itself, while the third, Porto Santo, lies a short hop away on the island of the same name, one of four comprising the archipelago.
The best way to enjoy them is with a Madeira Golf Passport - available from most hotels and golf clubs - which entitles the bearer to five rounds of golf across the two ‘mainland’ tracks. And our lucky winner will receive two.
Robert Trent Jones Snr’s 1991 redesign of Santo da Serra - which dates originally from 1937 - created a spectacular 27-hole complex in a beautiful natural landscape, with views of Porto Santo and the bay of Machico, where Portuguese navigators first landed in 1419.
The Cabell B Robinson- designed Palheiro Golf opened in 1993 and sits within the magnificent Palheiro Estate. At nearly 1,640ft above sea level, the location enjoys dramatic views of Madeira’s mountainous skyline and the vast Atlantic Ocean, as well as the island’s capital, Funchal.
A short, 20-minute flight - or a two-and-a-half hour cruise - will cover the 27 miles between Madeira and the archipelago’s eastern-most island, Porto Santo, home to Porto Santo Golfe, which hosted the Madeira Islands Open between 2009 and 2011.
Laid out by Severiano Ballesteros, the course, which opened in 2004, was built to environmentally conscious standards and comprises two distinct nines, spanning an area from sand dunes to basalt cliffs.
The prize includes three nights’ accommodation for two at the four-star Vila Galé Santa Cruz, on a bed-and-breakfast basis, two Madeira Golf Passports and the experience of both a cable car and traditional wicker toboggan ride. Flights are not included.
The 262-room Vila Galé Santa Cruz offers incomparable views of the Atlantic Ocean, yet is just five minutes away from the airport. It features two restaurants, two bars, an outdoor pool and spa with heated indoor pool, sauna, Turkish bath, gym and massage rooms, and is just a 10-minute transfer from both Palheiro Golf and Santo da Serra Golf.
