Royal Norwich is the premier golf club in Norfolk featuring a stunning golf course set in a 400 year old parkland estate, with a dining experience to match.

Royal Norwich is an excellent venue for a ladies away day or a weekend for the girls. Back in 2017, Royal Norwich Golf Club closed the doors on its original location close to the city centre. They relocated 20 minutes north to Weston Longueville and the redeveloped site of the former Weston Park Golf Club.

Impressive facilities

You know you are in for a treat when you drive up to the impressive clubhouse! Once an elegant country house, the clubhouse now known as The Stables, has been renovated and seamlessly combines both the traditional and the new.

With its private dining facilities, the welcoming Paddock Bar and informal eating areas that can serve anything from the basic golfer’s bacon buttie to a gourmet meal from its open kitchen – take note, the carrot cake shouldn’t be missed! - and even a micro-brewery serving its very own craft beer, there really is something for everyone.

The vision at Royal Norwich

The vision of the management team at Royal Norwich was to ensure an inclusive culture for everyone – men, women and juniors alike. The membership offerings reflect this with

  • a fully inclusive membership with unlimited access to all facilities on a 5, 6 or 7-day basis;
  • the increasingly popular Braid points membership for golfers constrained by time; or
  • the junior membership where youngsters are introduced to the game in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

In addition, there is

  • a 10-bay driving range with Trackman facilities for the serious golfer to analyse their game
  • a 6-hole Academy course for beginners or for those just wanting to hone their skills.

The Course

Opened by Ryder Cup favourite, Ian Poulter, in 2019, the course is set up with the front and back 9 holes both returning to the clubhouse. The front 9 fairways meander through mature parkland terrain and are tighter and more tree-lined, and the back 9 has wider fairways with more opportunities to launch those drives from the tees! Every hole has its challenges, but the course is defined by the undulating and tricky USGA graded greens. Holing out takes a keen eye and nerve to overcome the twists and turns in the putting surfaces.

Another new concept now gaining acceptance and introduced at Royal Norwich is the five genderless tees; so golfers of any standard can enjoy their round. For me, the 14th hole is one I’d never get bored of playing. It looks easy but watch out! Bunkers on the right and the run-offs from the green can easily add unwanted points to your card! And whatever tee you’re playing, the signature 17th hole over water shouldn’t be underestimated. Take a higher club to make sure you hit the green.

Burgeoning reputation

It's a testament to the development of the course that Royal Norwich will host the Clutch Pro Tour in 2022 and the England Girls’ Championship in 2024.

Overall, Royal Norwich offers a great all-round golfing experience which Women & Golf definitely recommends. Add it to your bucket list of courses to play.
