Ever thought of Flanders?
As you head north, driving past the Royal Ostend Golf Club (the only links course in Belgium) and towards Knokke, for ladies, this is the place to be. It has more boutique and brand shops than any other seaside resort in Europe and it has one of Belgium’s best golf courses.
Knokke Le Zoute is a traditional course laid out on the coastal sandy soil. The clubhouse is home to a small boutique hotel and the food, like in every Belgian golf club, is fantastic. Move slightly inland and head for Bruges, the ‘Venice of the North’, where the sweet scent of waffles wafts through the cobbled streets and past the ample chocolate shops. Just outside the city is Damme Golf & Country Club, a 27-hole complex with great facilities.
Well-deserved luxury at Gleneagles...
Nestling in Auchterarder, near Perth and Stirling, Gleneagles is truly a luxurious resort and when it comes to detail, no stone is left unturned. Today’s Gleneagles has retained its palatial charm and grandiose ambience, albeit, with a subtle modern twist, that first attracted high society when it opened in 1924. All 232 bedrooms including 27 suites are plush with elegant furnishings and modern amenities. There is a wide range of restaurants and bars, from Michelin-starred dining to a more informal affair, and a variety of activities including archery, fly fishing, shooting, gundog training, tennis, and horse riding. The Stadium course at PGA Catalunya is the European Tour’s Sawgrass, and it’s tough, too. However, with a number of tee boxes, it’s certainly worth teeing it up on the course Spain had hoped would host the 2022 Ryder Cup.
Beautiful Bermuda
Bermuda is a golfer’s paradise with world-class courses, most of which offer sweeping ocean views, threaded throughout the island’s 21 square miles.
Port Royal Golf Course, host of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf for seven consecutive years, is one of the most popular golf courses on the island, providing breathtaking ocean views. The undulating terrain, lush greenery and oceanside cliffs create an unforgettable experience.
High season is May to October. Bermuda’s off-season is the exact opposite of that in the Caribbean. From December until March many hotels offer big discounts. For guaranteed sunshine, golfers are advised to travel between May and September.
