It’s not often I’m taken by surprise but a visit to The Dorset Golf & Country Club did just that - there’s so much this facility has to offer that even the rotten weather didn’t make me want to go home!
The resort, located just off the A35 in Bere Regis, only a few miles west of Poole and close to Dorset’s dramatic Jurassic Coast, is situated in 300 acres of beautiful Dorset forest and heathland. Evidence of Scandinavian elegance, influenced by the resort’s Danish owners, Count & Countess Lerche, together with the natural beauty of the Dorset countryside, provides visitors with a relaxing, friendly and comfortable resort. Apart from some fabulous golf, the resort also offers the chance to play bowls, fish in one of three private lakes, take long country walks, or, especially for us ladies, a pampering session in the recently opened beauty salon.
The relatively small pro shop, ably managed by the resort’s charming group of pros, has a reasonable selection of ladies’ golfing goods, and the ladies’ locker room can accommodate larger groups. Visitors can also take advantage of the excellent practice facilities that includes a 16-bay driving range and short game areas.
Whatever combination of the Lakeland, Woodland and Parkland loops of 9 holes you play, you can lose yourself (but hopefully not too many balls!) in the picturesque surroundings. The large, immaculately maintained greens, well-kept tree and shrub-lined fairways, deviously positioned bunkers and various lakes and streams that criss-cross the course demand accuracy and offer a different challenge to every golfer.
Each loop is easy to walk although buggies are available to hire. The comfortable clubhouse with its large dining extension can provide whatever culinary requests you have and the cuisine is worthy of any good restaurant. If it’s just a relaxing drink you’re looking for to mull over those ‘if only’ moments on the course, the lounge and its well-stocked bar is open all day.
If you decide to stay at the resort there’s an amazing choice of accommodation including two four-bedroom cottages to hire, both with private facilities, or you might prefer one of the 4-star twin-bedded, en-suite rooms in the Golf Lodge Hotel. I can highly recommend one of the twelve fabulous Scandinavian lodges located on he five-star Dorset Resort Village, just a short walk from the clubhouse.
These luxury lodges can accommodate groups of four, six or eight, all bedrooms are en-suite, each lodge has a lovely veranda or patio area with a barbeque and fully equipped kitchen for those who prefer to cater for themselves. There’s even a laundry and drying room (believe me, they’re a Godsend when the heavens open), and to top it all, each lodge has its own sauna!
A little piece of Scandinavian heaven in the heart of the Dorset countryside is sheer indulgence. If you haven’t visited before, this is one golf resort you should experience. You cannot fail to enjoy somewhere that really does have something for everyone.
