There are so many wonderful golf destinations around the world, and everyone’s taste is different, but here are a few places that stir up happy memories for W&G’s contributor Philippa Kennedy.
My golfing memory banks include some memorable moments. Driving over the alligator pen on a par three at Sun City was nervewracking, landing in what I thought was a bunker in Kabul that turned out to be a cleared landmine crater came close and putting on ‘browns’ rather than ‘greens’ in Freetown, Sierra Leone was interesting.
But the old heartstrings always pull me back to Ireland. On a fine day, it has to be the ultimate golfing venue.
The spectacular panoramic views from the raised seventh green at Bantry Bay Golf Club in West Cork with its magnificent backdrop of the Caha mountains reflected in the azure water is top of my list although there are so many fantastic courses to choose from. The European in Wicklow is a wild and wonderful track, closely followed by Ballyliffin’s Old Course in Donegal and you have to include Portmarnock and Royal Portrush in the mix.
What gives Ireland the edge is the ‘craic’ you have later, as anyone who has been there on a group trip will already know.
