Finding it hard to decide on a venue for an away-day or weekend with the girls? Or do you fancy entering an Open competition at a different venue? Let Women & Golf help you decide.

Set in the rolling hills of Hampshire is Old Thorns Manor Hotel and Country Estate. Located just off the A3, it’s easily accessible and judging by the number of cars in the car park, it’s clearly a very popular venue.

Since opening in 1982, the resort has undergone a multi-million pound development and has extended its accommodation to more than 160 modern bedrooms, opened a new sports bar and - most importantly - a champagne and cocktail bar!

The course has hosted several televised events and it’s easy to see why. As well as as being well maintained with an interesting layout, the views of the surrounding countryside are beautiful. To see the course at its best, the ideal time to visit is during springtime when the mass of rhododendron bushes are in full bloom.

It a good walk across the undulating landscape and some ladies may prefer a buggy. Being heavily wooded, accuracy is required to score well and don’t be deceived by the holes that might look short on the scorecard in relation to par as bunkers and natural springs and ponds feature throughout.

The greens are a different story altogether! They are quick and many are severely sloping so it’s easy to three or even four putt! The par-3 16th with an elevated green is undeniably one of the most difficult holes on the course.

The resort is cleverly designed, as even with wedding guests and conference delegates milling around, the separate areas allow for individual space. If you are visiting with a group of ladies there is the option of booking a private room for dinner so you can make loads of noise at your heart’s content!

The buffet breakfast in the Kings restaurant is excellent and it’s also open for dinner. Should you wish to dine off site, the food at the Deers Hut pub at the end of the hotel’s driveway is highly recommended.

There’s also a health club and spa with a 20-metre pool so all in all, Old Thorns has plenty to offer the girls!
