A girls weekend away is always a good idea, but when it's at Foxhills Club & Resort in Surrey, then it's simply a must-do. Here's why it's time to visit this country retreat.
A girls weekend away is always a good idea, but when it's at Foxhills Club & Resort in Surrey, then it's simply a must-do. Conveniently located close to the M25 and within a short drive of many of which have their own private Heathrow Airport, the M3 and garden, or overlook one of the outdoor M4, is the Foxhills Club & Resort.
A splendid manor house that was once home to Chertsey Abbey in the middle ages sits at the heart of the 400-acre resort, although it takes its name from the 18th century politician Charles James Fox.
Whilst Foxhills feels grand and luxurious - and so it is - this place is also as relaxed as a modern family-friendly golf resort should be.
There is no accommodation in the manor house, just various sized function rooms and one of Surrey’s top restaurants, The Manor, which holds two AA Rosettes, and it’s easy to see why as this fine dining restaurant provides a memorable gourmet experience. A plentiful breakfast is also served here to set you up for the day ahead.
The 70 spacious bedrooms and suites, many of which have their own private garden, or overlook one of the outdoor swimming pools, are located in a pretty courtyard, and the one and two storey buildings complement the manor house and its surroundings beautifully.
It’s a compact resort, and just a short stroll from the manor house and bedrooms is the modern clubhouse with a super outdoor terrace that overlooks the shared 18th greens of the two championship courses. Here you’ll find the aptly named Nineteen restaurant that offers a more informal dining option for breakfast, lunch and dinner, or simply that all-important beverage.
The spa adjoins the clubhouse and if you intend to relax you won’t feel short-changed by the facilities that include a hydropool with massage jets, steam room, thermal area, Finnish saunas, outdoor hot tub and a spa garden featuring one of England’s first natural swimming pools. For those of you that like to keep fit even when you’re taking a break, there’s a fully equipped gym and a comprehensive exercise class timetable.
If that’s not enough, another sporting world exists behind the hub of the resort in the form of 11 tennis courts. Having not picked up a racquet for many years, running around a tennis court on a hot June day was probably not the best preparation for 18 holes!
On this visit time only permitted one round of golf on the Longcross course, a lovely parkland layout that’s lined with tall pine, beech and silver birch trees, so whilst it’s a pleasurable walk, accuracy is compulsory if you want to score well. Aside from the amount of timber, there are some blind tee shots, dog-legs and the attractive looking 162 yard par-3 16th requires a well-struck shot to carry a pond and front bunkers in order to reach the green safely.
In addition to the 18-hole Bernard Hunt course (home to the Senior PGA Professional Championship), there’s also a 9-hole par-3 Manor course that’s ideal for beginners or someone like me that used the course as a facility to hone my short game. As I practised on a Saturday morning, it was lovely to hear music coming from the Manor House as young girls took a ballet lesson.
That’s what’s so refreshing about Foxhills, as there are activities on offer for members and visitors of all ages to enjoy in a relaxed environment where everyone is made to feel welcome.
