Pure Salt Adriano Hotel Mallorca

If you're planning a last minute summer getaway then Mallorca’s Pure Salt Adriano Hotel is the ideal place to relax, re-energise, and fully experience the Mediterranean way of life.

Palma de Mallorca’s famous harbour is one of the largest in the Mediterranean, stretching the entire length of the island’s stunning capital city and continues to attract visitors the world over. However, over recent years, it’s the upscale marina at Port Adriano in the southwest, about a 20-minute drive from the centre of Palma, that has become one of Mallorca’s modern-day hotspots.

Port Adriano, remodelled by renowned French architect Philippe Starck, opened in 2012 and oozes sophistication. The marina is packed with super-yachts, fashion boutiques, chill-out bars, shops and restaurants, where it’s fun to observe the yachting community going about their business, with a sneak peek at their luxury lifestyle.

In a prime clifftop setting overlooking Port Adriano and El Toro beach, is the adult-only Pure Salt Hotel that’s open from mid-February to mid-November. The desire of the family-owned Pure Salt brand was to create a place where guests can completely relax, re-energise, and fully experience the Mediterranean way of life. Pure Salt Adriano interprets this vision and passion beautifully.

As soon as I stepped foot inside the cream-stone property with its elegant décor and assortment of Renaissance art, I felt a sense of calm and was then immediately drawn towards the terrace and in awe of the panoramic view that gives you an instant and direct connection with the marina and the sea beyond. From the hotel, it only takes fives minutes to walk downhill to the marina or the beach, but there is a shuttle service, which is handy if you don’t fancy the uphill walk back!

Guests can enjoy a similar view from all 93 bedrooms and suites, and as nearly half of these feature a private Jacuzzi on the terrace, it’s a vista that becomes more relaxing by the minute, especially if you’ve got a good book in one hand and a glass of something sparkly in the other! Bedrooms are stylishly decorated with a dark wood floor that continues up the rear wall to form a shelf unit behind the sumptuous bed, and there’s no shortage of sockets, mod-cons like a Nespresso coffee maker, a mirror television, and Bvlgari toiletries - all nice touches that contribute to that important feel-good factor when you’re treating yourself to a break.

The huge infinity pool that extends to the edge of the cliff is very enticing and in front of the ‘swim-up’ guest rooms, there’s also a long and narrow lap pool that anyone can use.

If you’re not sunbathing, swimming, waiting for a yoga class to begin on one of the well-tended lawn areas, or renting one of the hotel’s bicycles, you may want to indulge in some holiday pampering at the first-class O Spa that adopts a holistic approach to wellness. Facilities include a gym, hair salon, indoor heated swimming pool, steam room, sauna and Jacuzzi, and there are a number of treatments on the spa menu using Natura Bissé and Gaia natural Majorcan products. A golfer’s massage is likely to be just the ticket after a round, although there’s no need to travel far at all to hone your swing. In fact, along the corridor and down the spiral staircase is where you’ll find a coaching studio and a Flightscope golf simulator, which is the only one on the island.

There are free transfers to the nearest golf courses that are just a few miles away - Santa Ponsa 1 and T-Country (formerly Poniente) - and there are another dozen courses within half an hour’s drive. Alcanada Golf Club near the town of Alcudia in the north of the island is worth the green fee and the 50-minute drive from Palma.

I’ve been fortunate to play Santa Ponsa 1 on several occasions and whilst this distinguished course generally beats me, it’s the reason I never tire playing it. Host to the European Tour on six occasions, it’s fairly flat with wide fairways, but it’s pretty long and with several dog-legs, bunkers and water hazards, accuracy must be at a premium to score well. From the back tee, the par-5 10th at 590 metres is one of the longest par-5s in Europe, and it’s no pushover from the forward tee either. Most ladies will need to take a driver at the uphill 170-metre par-3 12th, which is about as hilly as it gets, and beware the par-4 16th, which in my opinion, is the most difficult hole on the course. A left-to-right dogleg that skirts an enormous lake on the right of the hole often means that the safest and only option is to play it as a par-5.

Arabella is an immaculate 63-hole, large-scale golf resort including three 18-hole courses, as well as a 9-hole pitch and putt course, excellent practice facilities and a gathering of hotels. Time only permitted one round on the signature course Son Muntaner, which is of true championship standard, but at the same time challenging and fair for golfers of all abilities. Interesting doglegs, elevated teeing grounds, water hazards and several long and narrow greens, along with picturesque mountain views, combine to ensure a memorable experience. You’ll also encounter some history as the thousand-year-old “Sa Capitana” on the 15th hole is the oldest registered olive tree on the island. There’s a marvellous terrace overlooking the 9th green and 10th tee that’s super for a post-round drink, and that’s all we had time for, as a traditional Spanish tapas lunch was waiting for us at the hotel - and it was certainly worth the wait.

The Tapas bar is one option and the other is the hotel’s signature restaurant Adriana. This is where morning begins, al fresco preferably, with a complete breakfast buffet. In the evening, there’s a choice of a set menu or a la carte, with dishes inspired by Mediterranean flavours. An evening is not complete without admiring Port Adriano’s lights glistening in the distance whilst sipping a signature cocktail. That’s when I was truly relaxed and can confirm that the Pure Salt brand has done a great job!
