Not only are many of the courses set in areas of outstanding natural beauty, but they are also an excellent starting point for discovering a region of Italy with much to offer: cities rich in art, history and culture, unspoiled countryside, soaring Alpine peaks and wide valleys, pristine lakes and some of the world’s choicest food and wine.
At the forefront of the plethora of top golf courses in Piedmont are Golf Club Biella “Le Betulle”, Circolo Golf Bogogno, Royal Park Golf & Country Club and Circolo Golf Torino.
“Le Betulle” is an English-style country club with a course, laid out in a natural landscape, by John Morrison. It is regularly rated among Italy’s finest layouts and the same is true of Bogogno, which is located between Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore and features two 18-hole courses designed by acclaimed American architect Robert von Hagge – the Del Conte and the Bonora.
Named as the best golf course in Italy by numerous golf magazines, Royal Park is set in a mature forest, framed by the Alps in La Mandria Regional Park.
Right next door is Torino which encompasses two courses, both characterised by their setting of mature trees fringing the holes and fairways, and natural water hazards comprising streams and small lakes.
Golfers also won’t fail to be impressed by the 27 holes on offer at Castelconturbia Golf Club which, just a short drive from Bologno, were created by Robert Trent Jones Snr over an area of one millon square metres.
Golf Club Des Iles Borromees offers lovely views over the Sempione and Val Grande mountains, and four lakes: Maggiore, Varese, Monate and Comabbio, all against the backdrops of the Canton Ticino Alps.
La Margherita Golf Club has hosted numerous national and international tournaments since being created under the leadership of Luciano Roccia and Piero Cora and is well worth a visit, as is Golf Club I Girasoli nearby, while Sestrieres Golf Club was founded in 1932 under the guidance of Fiat heir Edoardo Agnelli and a number of British architects and features breathtaking mountain views.
Other great golf courses in the region include Margara Golf Club (36 holes), Golf Club Villa Carolina (36 holes) and Golf Club Cavaglià (18 holes with a well-appointed hotel).
Away from the fairways, Piedmont has plenty to offer with an abundance of charming cities, nature, art and superb cuisine waiting to be experienced and explored.
