Home to outstanding scenery and fabulous golf courses, Eastern Algarve is the ideal choice for those who want to head off the beaten track, and enjoy the more secluded beaches and sleepier port towns which stretch between Faro and the Spanish border.

Monte Rei is the jewel in the region, a dramatic Jack Nicklaus designed course, beautifully situated between the Serra do Caldeirão mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. The Golden Bear’s first signature design in Portugal is out of the top drawer, and regularly ranks among the top ten courses in continental Europe. Tucked away in the foothills near the Spanish border, the course features an abundance of water hazards and exquisite bunkering, and will delight with eighteen unique and masterful holes.

Golfers will be equally charmed with the views at Quinta da Ria, another of Portugal’s finest golf courses that opened in 2002. The Rocky Roquemore layout carves its way through the woodlands and wetlands of the unspoilt Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, and is among the most peaceful and under-developed courses in the Algarve. Water comes into play throughout, yet despite some punishing hazards, it has been designed to be playable for all levels of golfer.

Its sister course Quinta de Cima, that opened in the same year, is also a haven from the commercialisation further west and is certainly on an equal footing. The beautiful parkland course was built with tournament golf in mind, and with accuracy essential throughout, is certainly the tougher of the two tracks. Just a few kilometres east of the ancient city of Tavira, the Sir Henry Cotton designed Benamor Golf, is among the most picturesque courses in the region. Sitting in the nearby foothills of Barrocal, you will enjoy fantastic mountain and sea views, while as one of the only constructionfree golf course in the Algarve, it provides a welcome break from many of the area’s highly-developed resorts.

The Seve Ballesteros designed course at Quinta do Vale utilises all of the Spaniard’s expertise and legendary creativity, to create a challenging and thought-provoking test.

Meanwhile at Castro Marim, golfers will find three distinctive loops of nine which enjoy views of the River Guadiana and across to Spain. The resort, which also includes top-notch practice facilities, features an abundance of wildlife, and players may even get the opportunity to spot the elusive Iberian lynx.
